HGV fleet refinance

Hauliers run on margins measured in pence per mile, so capital sitting idle in fully owned tractor units is capital doing nothing useful.

Can you finance an HGV fleet re?

Yes, an operator can raise money against HGVs it owns outright. The funder values the tractor units, rigids or trailers, buys them and hires them straight back, leaving the fleet working without interruption or downtime. Vehicles must be clear of finance and registered to the operating business. Valuations follow the used truck market, which is well established in the UK and Europe, so mainstream marques on standard specifications release the most. Funders will also want to understand why the cash is needed before they commit to a fleet refinance.

Used kit: Yes — older trucks still raise funds where the emissions standard keeps them compliant for the work they do, though advances fall away sharply on very high-mileage units.

What would an HGV fleet re cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Truck refinance is a specialist corner of the market and placement matters enormously. Funders look first at V5 documents and purchase invoices to establish that the operating company, not a director or an associated entity, holds title. Then they look at the fleet itself: mileage, Euro emissions standard, MOT history and how much life is left before a replacement cycle. Trailers value differently from units and are often assessed separately. Because haulage is cyclical, underwriters read the accounts alongside the request, and a refinance sought to cover fuel and wages will be identified for what it is and declined. A refinance sought to service a new contract, supported by the contract itself, is a far stronger case. Disposal has accounting consequences, so involve your accountant.

Who buys one

Often a haulier that bought a batch of trucks outright after a strong contract, now facing the cost of taking on more work: driver recruitment, additional trailers, a bigger yard or an O-licence variation. The fleet is paid for, the margin is thin, and the equity in the trucks is the most accessible money in the business.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

HGV fleet refinance questions

Can trailers be refinanced as well as the units?

Yes, and they often behave well because they last a long time and hold value steadily. They are usually valued separately from tractor units, with condition of the floor, curtains and running gear driving the figure rather than the year of build.

Does the emissions standard affect what we can raise?

Significantly. A truck that cannot work in the low emission zones your customers require has a narrower buyer pool, and funders price that in. Compliant units hold value better and raise more, which is worth factoring into replacement planning.

What if some trucks are owned by a director personally?

Those are generally excluded unless ownership is regularised first. A funder buys from the entity named on the invoice and the V5, so mismatched ownership between the director and the operating company has to be resolved before the vehicle can be included.

Will refinancing affect our operator licence?

It should not, because the vehicles remain in your possession and under your operator licence and maintenance arrangements. The change is in legal title only. If in doubt, check with your transport consultant as part of the process.

How is mileage treated on older units?

It is one of the main drivers of value. A truck with a million kilometres behind it still has worth, but the advance against it will be modest. Funders look at mileage alongside service history and the general condition of the driveline.
