Boat finance is a specialist market and a small one, which is precisely why going direct to a high street lender rarely works. We arrange marine finance for private buyers and charter operators — narrowboats, river cruisers, sailing yachts, motor yachts and RIBs — through lenders who understand marine assets and the paperwork that comes with them.

What you can fund

Narrowboats

Leisure and residential moorings.

River cruisers

Inland waterways craft.

Sailing yachts

Coastal and blue water.

Motor yachts

Including used imports.

RIBs & day boats

Private and commercial.

Charter fleets

Assessed on trading income.

How boat finance works

Marine finance is normally hire purchase secured against the vessel, over terms that can be considerably longer than other leisure assets because well-maintained boats last decades and depreciate slowly. A steel narrowboat that has been blacked on schedule can be worth much of what it cost twenty years on, and lenders price accordingly.

What the lender needs is evidence the vessel is what it is claimed to be and that title is clean. A recent survey, clear proof of ownership and, where relevant, registration all make an application straightforward. Their absence is usually what causes a decline, rather than anything about the buyer.

Narrowboats and inland craft

Narrowboats are the most commonly funded inland vessels. Hull thickness from a recent survey, the age of the fit-out and whether there is a residential or leisure mooring all feed into the decision. Continuous cruising is not a barrier, though a secure mooring generally helps.

Yachts, cruisers and RIBs

Sea-going craft bring VAT status and registration into play, particularly on imports and older boats where proof of VAT paid can be difficult to produce. It is worth establishing that before you agree a price, because it affects both value and fundability.

Charter and commercial use

If the boat will earn — charter, day trips, holiday hire — it is assessed as a business asset on projected income and trading position rather than personal affordability. That is often the better route, and can bring the wider commercial lending panel into play.

What to send us

Send us the vessel details, the asking price, whether you have a recent survey, and where it will be kept. Tell us if it is for private use or charter, because that decides which panel we approach. No credit check to ask.

This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. Frequently asked questions

Can I get finance on a used boat?
Yes, and most marine finance is on used vessels. Boats depreciate slowly when properly maintained, so age matters less than condition. A recent survey, clear proof of ownership and, where relevant, evidence of VAT status are what make an application straightforward.
How long can boat finance run for?
Often longer than other leisure assets, because well-maintained boats hold value over decades. The vessel type, age, survey condition and value all feed into the term a lender will offer.
Do I need a survey for boat finance?
For anything other than a new build, usually yes. The survey tells the lender the vessel is what it is claimed to be and what condition it is in — on a steel narrowboat, hull thickness readings particularly. It protects you as much as the lender.
Can I finance a narrowboat I live on?
Yes. Residential use is not a barrier, though lenders will want to understand the mooring arrangement. A secure residential mooring generally helps; continuous cruising is fundable but narrows the panel.
Can I finance a boat for charter?
Yes, and it is usually assessed as a business asset on projected charter income and your trading position rather than personal affordability. That often opens up the commercial lending panel and can suit better than consumer finance.
Do you cover my area?
Yes — CW Asset Finance is based in Tadcaster and works with clients Leeds, York, Harrogate, Wakefield, Selby, Tadcaster & across North & West Yorkshire, as well as nationwide.
