Can you finance an outboard engine?

Yes. An outboard can be funded in its own right, not only as part of a boat purchase, which matters because the engine is often worth more than the hull it hangs on. New four-strokes and dealer-supplied repower packages place most easily. Used engines are fundable where the serial number checks out and there is a service history. The thing to watch is identification and security: outboards are portable and among the most stolen marine assets in Britain, so funders record the serial number, want the engine matched to a specific hull, and will ask where it is stored.

Used kit: Yes — used outboards fund where the serial number, hours and service record are verifiable, though new and dealer repower packages place more easily.

What would an outboard engine cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

An outboard is one of the few marine items that a general asset funder will occasionally consider, but the serious appetite still sits with the marine panel, and the difference shows in how the engine is documented. Funders record the serial number on the agreement and want to know which hull it is fitted to, because an engine on its own is easy to move and hard to trace. There is no registration document for either the engine or the boat, so ownership is established through the dealer invoice or bill of sale. Where the buyer is an individual fitting an engine to a leisure boat, the agreement may be regulated, which narrows the panel. Commercial repowers are assessed on the trading use instead.

Who buys one

Boat owners repowering a sound hull rather than replacing the whole boat, angling and day boat owners moving from a tired two-stroke to a modern four-stroke, and commercial users such as RIB operators, training centres and safety boat contractors running engines to a replacement cycle. The trigger is usually a failed engine at the start of a season, or a dealer repower offer taken up over winter so the boat is ready by spring.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Outboard engine finance questions

Can I finance just the engine and keep my existing boat?

Yes, that is a standard repower case. The engine is funded as an asset in its own right and matched on the agreement to the hull it is being fitted to. Dealer supply with an invoice and a fitting record makes it straightforward. Keep the old engine details to hand as well, since a part exchange changes the figures.

Why does the lender want the serial number?

Because it is the only way to identify the asset. Outboards have no logbook, they are portable and they are stolen frequently. Recording the serial number on the agreement lets the funder identify its security and lets you prove what you own if the engine ever goes missing.

Can I finance a pair of outboards on a commercial RIB?

Yes, and twin installations are usually funded as one package. The application is assessed on the commercial use of the boat, so training, charter or support contracts form part of the case rather than personal affordability. Coding, training records and the contracts the boat works under all form part of the picture, so bring them with the quotation.

Is there finance for a second-hand outboard from a private seller?

It is possible but harder. Without a dealer invoice we have to build the ownership trail and verify the serial number has not been reported stolen. A dealer-supplied used engine with a warranty is a far simpler proposition to fund. Check the serial against the stolen equipment registers before any money changes hands.

Does the engine need to be insured separately?

It should be covered under the boat policy, and the funder will want evidence of that. Check the policy specifies the engine by serial number and covers theft while the boat is ashore or on a trailer, since that is where most outboard theft happens.
