Can I finance woodworking machinery?

Yes. Woodworking machinery is a mainstream asset class for finance. Panel saws, CNC routers and machining centres, edgebanders, spindle moulders, planers and thicknessers, wide-belt sanders, dust extraction systems, four-siders and beam saws are all commonly funded on hire purchase or lease.

Lenders like this machinery because it is substantial, serial-numbered and has an active second-hand market. That said, the more specialised or heavily customised a machine is, the thinner its resale market and the more cautious the lender — a standard panel saw and a bespoke production line are viewed quite differently even at similar values.

A few points that come up often. Installation, commissioning, tooling and software are sometimes fundable alongside the machine and sometimes not, so confirm what is included before you agree a price. Imported machinery, deposits paid to overseas suppliers and long lead times all need handling carefully, because funders usually pay on delivery rather than on order. Used machinery is financeable, with the same age and condition considerations as any other asset.

The case for financing is that a machine bought to increase capacity should be paying for itself out of the extra work it enables, while your cash stays in the business. The counterweight is that the payments are fixed and the total cost exceeds the cash price, and the machinery can be repossessed if you fall behind.
