Is supplier finance considered a loan?

Not usually in the plain sense of a loan, though it is still a form of credit. Supplier finance — sometimes called supply chain finance or payables finance — is an arrangement where a funder pays your supplier and you settle with the funder later. Money changes hands and there is a cost, so it is borrowing in substance even if it is not labelled a loan.

The accounting and legal treatment varies with the structure. Some arrangements sit as trade payables in your accounts, others are classified as debt. That distinction can matter for covenants, credit reference agencies and how your balance sheet reads to other lenders, so it is a question for your accountant on the specific facts.

Whatever it is called, the obligations behave like credit. There will be terms, charges, a repayment date and consequences for missing it. Read the documentation rather than relying on the product name.

CW Asset Finance arranges asset finance and business finance rather than supply chain facilities. Where you are buying equipment or vehicles from a supplier, asset finance is often the more direct answer, and we can talk you through whether it fits.
