Can I finance a wood chipper?

Yes. Wood chippers are one of the most commonly financed pieces of arb equipment, and both towable and tracked machines are widely accepted by lenders. Funding is usually hire purchase over an agreed term, secured on the chipper, with the option to include a deposit or part-exchange to reduce the amount borrowed.

Chippers suit finance well because they are clearly identifiable, hold value reasonably and directly generate income. Lenders will want the make, model, year and whether you are buying new from a dealer, used from a dealer, or privately. New and dealer-used purchases are the most straightforward; private sales are often possible but need extra checks on title and outstanding finance.

Think about capacity before you think about payments. Buying a machine slightly larger than today’s typical job usually costs a little more each month but avoids the cost and disruption of replacing it within a season or two. Conversely, do not finance capacity you have no realistic prospect of using.

The balance to strike is between monthly cost and cash flow. A chipper financed over a longer term costs less each month but more in total, and leaves you committed for longer. Missed payments can result in the machine being taken back, which for most arb businesses means losing the ability to work at all.
