Laundry equipment finance

Commercial laundry machines are proper hard assets with real second-hand value, which puts them in a stronger position than most equipment on this list.

Can you finance laundry equipment?

Yes, and laundry is one of the easier sectors here to fund. Commercial washers, dryers, ironers and finishing equipment are durable, serial-numbered and genuinely sought after second-hand, so funders can see a recovery route that simply does not exist for salon or shop fittings. Hire purchase is the usual structure and used equipment from established dealers funds well. The point that catches buyers out is installation: steam, gas, drainage, ventilation and three-phase power are building works, and that portion of the cost has no recovery value even though the machines do.

Used kit: Yes, and more readily than most assets in this sector — reconditioned commercial laundry machines from recognised dealers are routinely funded.

What would laundry equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

After pages of soft asset caution, laundry is the refreshing exception and it is worth saying clearly. A commercial washer-extractor from a recognised manufacturer has a well-established used market, dealers who will buy it, a serial number and a long working life, so a funder genuinely has security. That widens the pool and usually improves what is available. The caveats are about everything around the machine. Steam supply, gas connections, ducting, drainage runs, plinths and upgraded electrical supplies are building works that vanish into the property. And in a leased unit a funder may want the landlord to confirm they will not claim installed machines as fixtures, particularly where they are plumbed into a purpose-built laundry room.

Who buys one

Typically a care home or hotel bringing laundry in-house to control costs and turnaround, or a commercial laundry replacing machines that have run for a decade. Veterinary practices, gyms, sports clubs and holiday parks fit smaller rooms for the same reasons. The trigger is often a machine failing at the worst possible moment and exposing how much the business depends on it.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Laundry equipment finance questions

Why is laundry easier to fund than most equipment?

Because the machines are genuinely recoverable and resaleable. A dealer will buy a working commercial washer, it carries a serial number, and it has a long life ahead of it. That gives a funder security in a way that a salon chair or a shop counter never can, so more funders are willing to write the business.

Can the plumbing and electrical work be included?

Frequently yes, where the supplier invoices the installation. Understand that the works portion is unrecoverable and a funder is unsecured on it. Where a laundry room is being built from scratch, the works can rival the machine cost, so show the split clearly on the quotation.

Do I need to own the building?

No. Plenty of hotels, care homes and launderettes lease. What a funder wants is a lease with sensible time remaining and, sometimes, a short confirmation from the landlord that financed machines remain your property. Raise it early because landlord responses are often the slowest part of a deal.

Is a care home laundry treated differently?

The equipment is assessed the same way, but funders will look at the wider business, including occupancy and regulatory standing. Care homes often need specific wash cycle capabilities for infection control, which affects your equipment choice. That is a specification matter for your supplier rather than a credit matter for the funder.

Can I refinance laundry machines I already own?

Sometimes, and this is one of the few places in this sector where refinance is realistic, precisely because the machines hold value. A funder would want proof of ownership, the serial numbers and a view on age and condition. It is not guaranteed, but it is worth asking rather than dismissing.
