How much does a forklift cost in the UK?
Rough bands from around 45 live UK dealer listings — and the reason a cheap electric truck can turn out to be the expensive one.
A used 2.5 to 3 tonne diesel or gas counterbalance truck — the workhorse of the UK market — runs roughly £4,595 to £13,750, with most sitting between £5,750 and £10,500. A new diesel of the same size is about £17,999 to £20,950. All excluding VAT.
Electric trucks look similar on price — £5,750 to £10,750 used — but that is not the whole cost. See the battery section.

| Used diesel / LPG, 2.5 – 3.0t | £4,595 – £13,750 | 10 | The bulk sits £5,750–£10,500. |

On an electric truck, you are partly buying a battery
This is the thing worth knowing before you compare an electric truck with a diesel one on price alone.
| Item | UK price (ex VAT) |
|---|---|
| Used electric counterbalance, 1–3t | £5,750 – £10,750 |
| Replacement 24V 210–270Ah traction battery | £1,438 – £1,705 |
| Replacement 48V 480Ah gel traction battery | £7,820 |
| Replacement range quoted by one UK dealer | £1,000 to over £10,000 |
Read the highlighted row against the first one. A £7,820 battery in a truck worth £5,750 to £10,750 is not a service item — it is a substantial share of the machine’s entire value, and on the cheaper end of that range it exceeds it.
How old is the battery, and is it the original? What condition is it in, and has it been load-tested? And is a charger included — because that is a separate item too. A cheap electric forklift with a tired battery is the most expensive truck on the forecourt.

New forklift list prices
Unlike combines, new forklifts do have published UK list prices. Ex VAT:
| Type | List price (ex VAT) |
|---|---|
| Lithium-ion electric, 1.2 – 3.5t | £7,999 – £18,999 |
| Diesel, 2.5 – 3.5t | £17,999 – £20,950 |
| Rough terrain, 2.5 – 5t | £22,950 – £42,950 |
The gap between a new diesel at around £18,000 and a good used one at around £8,000 is what makes this asset class a common finance conversation: the monthly difference is often smaller than people expect once the cost is spread over the years the truck will work.
The costs that are not in the sticker price
- Thorough examination (LOLER / PUWER). Roughly £50 to £100 per truck, with one dealer putting the average at £125 to £150 and a CFTS examination advertised at £124.99 including travel. Due every six or twelve months depending on use.
- The battery, on electric. See above. It is the single biggest hidden cost in this asset class.
- Mast and attachments. A triple mast with extra free lift costs more than a standard duplex; container spec more again. Attachment pricing is quote-only across every UK supplier we checked — the one published figure we found was a 2017 Cascade hydraulic fork positioner at £1,195.
- Hire, if you go that way instead. UK weekly rates ran roughly £60 to £375 a week on the stock we looked at, including maintenance and the statutory examination.
What would it cost a month?
Put the ex-VAT price in, since that is what a funder normally advances. The calculator quotes a flat rate with the equivalent APR beside it.
Prime is an established, profitable business with clean credit. Specialist covers newer businesses and credit that needs explaining — the asset itself carries part of the risk, which is why finance is often available where an unsecured loan is not.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £15,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £377 a month; total amount repayable approximately £18,090, of which £3,090 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. Rates shown are indicative flat rates with the equivalent APR alongside — the two are not the same number. Indicative only and does not constitute a quote or an offer of finance. Subject to status and lender approval.
Common questions
How much does a forklift cost in the UK?
Roughly, from live UK dealer stock in October 2026 and excluding VAT: a used 2.5 to 3.0 tonne diesel or LPG counterbalance truck runs about £4,595 to £13,750, with most sitting between £5,750 and £10,500. A smaller 1.5 to 2.0 tonne used truck runs about £4,500 to £8,875, and an older or high-hour machine can be had from around £4,500. New list prices run about £17,999 to £20,950 for a 2.5 to 3.5 tonne diesel and £7,999 to £18,999 for a lithium-ion electric. These are asking prices rather than sold prices.
Is an electric forklift cheaper than a diesel one?
Not necessarily, and the purchase price is the wrong place to look. Used electric counterbalance trucks list at roughly £5,750 to £10,750, which is broadly comparable with diesel. The difference is the battery: a replacement traction battery from a UK supplier runs from about £1,438 for a 24V 210–270Ah unit up to £7,820 for a 48V 480Ah gel battery, and one UK dealer puts the replacement range at £1,000 to over £10,000. On a mid-priced used electric truck, a tired battery can be worth more than the rest of the machine. Always ask the battery’s age, its condition and whether a charger is included.
What is a thorough examination and what does it cost?
It is the statutory inspection a lifting machine needs, under LOLER and PUWER. UK providers quote roughly £50 to £100 per truck, with one dealer putting the average at £125 to £150, and a CFTS examination advertised at £124.99 including travel. The interval is six or twelve months depending on use. It is a running cost rather than a purchase cost, but it is one of the things people forget when they compare owning against hiring, and a truck being sold without a current certificate is worth asking about.
Should I buy or hire a forklift?
It depends on how much of the year you need it. UK weekly hire rates on the stock we looked at ran roughly £60 to £375 a week depending on the truck. Against a used machine at £5,750 to £10,500, continuous hire gets expensive quickly — but hire includes maintenance and the thorough examination, and hands the residual value risk to someone else. The usual rule of thumb is that steady year-round use favours owning, and seasonal or project work favours hiring. If you are going to own it, finance spreads the cost over the period the truck is earning rather than taking it out of working capital in one go.
Are attachments included in the price?
Rarely stated, and we could not find reliable UK pricing for them. Every UK supplier of fork positioners, sideshifts and rotators that we checked quotes on request rather than publishing a price. The one real figure we found was a 2017 Cascade hydraulic fork positioner at £1,195, which is a single example rather than a guide. Mast type is the other variable that moves the price: a triple mast with more free lift costs more than a standard duplex, and a container-spec mast more again. Compare like for like on mast and attachments before comparing prices.
Do forklift prices include VAT?
Normally not. UK dealers quote ex VAT — one states plainly that all prices shown are subject to VAT — so at 20% a £10,000 truck costs £12,000 to buy. On a finance agreement the funder usually advances the ex-VAT price while the VAT falls due separately and up front, so it sits alongside your deposit rather than spreading across the term. A VAT-registered business reclaims it on the next return. Check each listing, because some marketplace entries show a bare figure with no VAT marker.
