Private ambulance finance
The vehicle that makes the first call rarely gets seen by the family, but it is the one a funeral business uses most often.

Can you finance a private ambulance?
Private ambulance finance funds the discreet transfer vehicles used to move the deceased from a home, hospital or coroner’s facility into the care of a funeral director. These are usually panel vans or estate-based conversions fitted with a deck, tracking and privacy glass. Because the conversion is specialised but the base vehicle is mainstream, they sit somewhere between ordinary commercial vehicle finance and full coachbuilt funeral funding. Funders assess the base vehicle conventionally and then take a view on the conversion, which adds cost but narrows the pool of buyers who would want it.
Used kit: Yes — used transfer vehicles are financed regularly, and because mileage is often modest and the interiors are cleaned to a clinical standard they present very well for their age.

What would a private ambulance cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
These vehicles are easier to place than a hearse but harder than a plain van, and the reason is the conversion. A funder can value a Mercedes Sprinter without difficulty; what it cannot easily value is the decking, the interior lining and the privacy treatment bolted into it. Most underwriters therefore lend confidently against the base vehicle and treat the conversion as adding little to recoverable value, even though it adds significantly to the invoice. A few specialist funders who understand the funeral sector take a more generous view, which is why placement matters. Working in the vehicle’s favour is the customer profile: funeral directors and coroner contractors are steady, long-trading businesses with reliable income, and that covenant strength frequently carries the decision.

Who buys one
Often a funeral business that has outgrown using a hearse for removals, or a company holding a coroner’s removal contract that requires dedicated vehicles available around the clock. Repatriation specialists also buy them, since the work involves long distances and needs a vehicle equipped for it.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Private ambulance finance questions
Is the conversion cost included in the funding?
Usually yes, where it appears on the same invoice from a recognised converter. What differs is how much recoverable value the funder attributes to it, which is generally less than the price paid because a converted interior appeals to a narrow set of buyers.
Can I convert a van I already own?
Sometimes the conversion alone can be funded, though not every funder will write it because a conversion on its own is difficult to repossess or resell. It is easier where the vehicle and the conversion are bought together from the outset.
Do coroner contracts help an application?
They can, because they demonstrate contracted income and a reason for the vehicle to exist. Providing the contract or a letter confirming the appointment gives an underwriter something concrete to consider alongside the accounts.
Is a twin deck vehicle harder to fund?
Not materially. The extra deck makes the vehicle more specialised, which slightly narrows resale, but funders familiar with the sector understand why removal firms specify them and treat it as normal for the work.
How does this compare with funding a hearse?
It is generally more straightforward, because the base vehicle is a mainstream van with an established used market. A hearse has no mainstream equivalent at all, which is why it needs a specialist funder while a transfer vehicle often does not.
