Box truck finance

Box bodies protect the load and secure it properly, which is why removals, retail and parcel operators keep buying them over curtainsiders.

Can you finance a box truck?

Yes. A box truck funds as a standard commercial vehicle, with the dry freight body treated as part of the asset where it comes from the dealer or a recognised bodybuilder. Used box trucks fund across a wide age range. What catches buyers is the internal fit: a plain dry box is a liquid, easy asset, but once it is fitted with fixed racking, shelving or a one-client interior, the pool of buyers who want it shrinks and funders lend against it more cautiously. If the interior is bespoke, expect the deal to lean on your trading strength.

Used kit: Yes — used box trucks fund readily to around ten or twelve years, with body delamination and tail lift condition the practical limits.

What would a box truck cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

A plain box on a common chassis is an easy placement. Resale is broad: removals, general distribution and owner-operators all buy them, and a GRP or plywood box lasts well. Underwriting shifts when the box is specialised. Fixed racking for a single product, a fitted interior for one customer, or a body built to an unusual dimension all narrow the recovery market, and funders compensate by leaning harder on the covenant. Tail lifts are the other factor — a column or cantilever lift is a significant part of the value and funders will want it serviced and certified. Operator assessment follows the usual pattern: fleets on accounts and disc margin, owner-operators personally. Corroded or delaminated bodies are the usual asset-side decline.

Who buys one

Removals firms, retail and furniture delivery operators, parcel and courier businesses scaling past vans, and event or exhibition companies moving valuable kit. The trigger is usually security and weather — a curtain does not protect stock left overnight or loaded in the rain — or a customer specifying a sealed vehicle for their goods. Pharmaceutical and high-value electronics carriers choose boxes because their customers insist on a sealed, lockable vehicle.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Box truck finance questions

Does a tail lift come under the same finance agreement?

Yes, where it is fitted by the supplying dealer or bodybuilder and appears on the invoice. It forms part of the vehicle. Retrofitted lifts from a third party after delivery are usually treated separately. Funders will expect the lift to be serviced and thoroughly examined, since it is lifting equipment in its own right.

Can I finance a box truck with racking inside?

Yes, but racking built for one specific product or customer narrows who would buy the vehicle second-hand, and funders price that in. A removable or generic racking system is neutral. If the interior is genuinely bespoke, the application rests more on your trading history than on the asset value, which is worth knowing early.

Is a box body or curtainsider better for removals?

Box, almost always. Removals need a sealed, secure vehicle that can be left loaded overnight and that protects contents from weather and prying eyes. Curtains suit forklift loading of pallets. Funders are comfortable with both, so choose on the work — the finance follows the vehicle rather than dictating it.

How long does a GRP box body last?

Well over a decade with reasonable care. The usual failure is delamination where panels absorb water, or damage at the rear from loading impacts. Funders inspect for both on used purchases because a failed box is expensive to replace. A sound body on an older chassis is often the better buy of the two options.

Can I finance a box truck for a parcel network contract?

Yes, and having the contract helps. Funders like the recurring income a network contract implies and will often ask to see it, particularly for newer operators. It does not need to be a guaranteed volume — it demonstrates the vehicle has work waiting for it, which is the practical question behind the underwriting.
