Can you finance a mobile workshop van?

Yes. Mobile workshop vans are funded as a vehicle plus fit-out, and the racking, power system, compressor and welding gear can usually be included on the same agreement provided they are invoiced with the van. Used service vans are fundable. The detail that catches people out is that a fit-out costs real money but adds very little to what the van is worth second-hand — a funder values the vehicle, not your shelving. That gap between what you spend and what the asset is worth is the thing to plan around before you sign an order.

Used kit: Yes. Used service vans are funded regularly, and a van that already has serviceable racking can be good value — just expect the lender valuation to reflect the vehicle rather than the fit-out.

What would a mobile workshop van cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it

The underwriting question here is always the same: how much of the total cost survives as recoverable value. A van is easy to value; bespoke racking, an inverter, a roof rack and a compressor are close to worthless on resale because the next buyer wants an empty load space. Funders therefore look at the fit-out spend as a proportion of the whole and may expect a deposit that covers the non-recoverable part. Established engineering businesses with accounts and contracts have a straightforward run. New starts are placeable, and a former employer becoming a first customer helps enormously. Where an expensive generator, welding set or compressor is involved, some lenders prefer to identify it as a separate asset. Declines usually stem from a fit-out that dwarfs the vehicle value with no deposit, or kit invoiced from three different suppliers with no coherent paperwork.

Who buys one

Mobile plant and HGV fitters, agricultural engineers, refrigeration and air conditioning engineers, lift and door service technicians, and utilities maintenance teams. Often a fitter who has left an employer to go out on their own and needs to carry a working inventory rather than a toolbox. Also established service firms replacing a van where the racking has outlived the vehicle and the fit-out needs transplanting or renewing.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Mobile workshop van finance questions

Can racking and tools go on the same finance as the van?

Often yes, if they are supplied and invoiced with the vehicle. One combined invoice from the supplier is far easier to fund than several from different firms. Bear in mind the fit-out adds little resale value, so a lender may want a deposit covering that portion.

Can I fund a compressor or generator fitted to the van?

Yes. Substantial kit like a vehicle-mounted compressor, welding set or generator is often identified as an asset in its own right, which can actually help because it is separately valuable. Give us the make, model and serial numbers and we will place it properly.

Does a fit-out reduce what the van is worth?

It does not usually reduce the value, but it rarely increases it either. Most second-hand buyers want a clean load area and will factor in stripping the racking out. Spend on a fit-out because it makes you productive, not because you expect to get it back.

Can I move my racking into a new van and fund both?

You can transfer racking, and the labour to do it can sometimes be included if it is on the supplier invoice. It is worth checking the racking actually fits — load bay dimensions vary more between models than people expect, and a partial refit often costs more than planned.

Can a newly self-employed engineer get a workshop van?

Frequently yes. Lenders like to see trade experience and a source of work — a former employer subcontracting to you, or a service contract you have taken with you, carries real weight. A deposit and a clean personal credit profile round out a placeable application.
