Applying for business finance can affect your personal credit file if a lender runs a hard search on you or asks you to give a personal guarantee. Many quotes begin with a soft search, which only you can see. Whether a footprint is left depends on the lender and how the application is submitted.
Sole traders and partnerships are not legally separate from the people behind them, so applications are usually assessed against your personal credit file. Limited company applications are assessed against the company, but directors are commonly credit searched as well, particularly on smaller or newer businesses.
A personal guarantee does not by itself appear as borrowing on your file. If the business defaults and the guarantee is called in, however, the consequences can reach you personally, and that can show up on your record. Take independent advice before signing one.
As a broker we can ask lenders how they search at each stage, and we try to avoid scattering applications across a panel. We cannot promise no search will be recorded — that is the lender’s decision, not ours.
