Yes. A survey vessel is funded as a commercial marine asset, assessed on the survey contracts it will service rather than on any leisure valuation. Used hulls are fundable and many operators buy a proven platform and fit it out. The complication is that a survey boat is two assets in one. The hull is durable and holds value; the sonar, positioning and acquisition equipment aboard it moves on a much faster technology cycle. Funders often treat the vessel and the survey suite as separate lines because their useful lives and resale markets are nothing alike.
Used kit: Yes — used hulls fund readily, though older sonar and positioning equipment is valued conservatively because the technology cycle is short.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
This is a narrow commercial marine placement and the split between hull and sensor package is the part a generalist funder gets wrong. The vessel itself needs a marine lender comfortable with a coded workboat, which means a code certificate, survey report and evidence of the waters it will operate in. The survey electronics may sit better with an equipment funder that understands short technology cycles and a specialist resale market with few buyers. Title on the hull is evidenced by Part 1 registration and bills of sale, not a logbook, and any marine mortgage must be cleared. Berthing and the shore office are separate contracts and cannot be folded in.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Hydrographic consultancies, nearshore geophysical contractors, port and harbour authorities and dredging companies carrying out their own pre and post-dredge surveys. The trigger is usually a framework win with a port, a cable route survey programme or a maintenance dredging contract that makes chartering a third party vessel uneconomic. Buyers are often technically led businesses with strong contract books but modest balance sheets, having previously subcontracted the vessel side of every job.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Often it is cleaner to split them. The hull and the sonar suite have very different working lives and very different resale markets, so funders frequently prefer separate lines. We arrange it whichever way the panel prices best for the package you are buying. Send us the sensor list and the hull details together so the split can be made properly.
If it operates commercially with crew aboard, yes, and the category governs how far offshore it may work. The coding position is part of what a funder assesses, because an uncoded hull cannot service the contracts that justify the investment. The category also drives crewing and safety equipment, which feed straight into running costs.
It is common and usually manageable. Because the acquisition system is often funded separately, an upgrade can be arranged as its own agreement without disturbing the vessel finance. Tell us the upgrade cycle you expect at the outset so the structure suits it. Upgrades planned around a contract win are easier to arrange than emergency replacements.
Frequently yes, and lease structures suit organisations that replace equipment on a fixed cycle or prefer not to hold the asset. The right structure depends on how you account for the vessel and how long you expect to keep it, which is worth discussing before we approach funders.
It can be, and conversions are common in nearshore work. The funder will want the conversion surveyed, the coding reissued for survey duties and the sensor installation documented. A properly engineered conversion with paperwork places far better than an informal one. Keep the naval architect report and the refit invoices together for the funder.
