Can you finance a salon chair?

Yes, salon chairs can be financed, but it helps to understand how funders see them. A styling chair is a soft asset with very little resale value once installed, so lenders underwrite the salon and the director rather than the chair. That normally means a hire purchase or lease agreement supported by trading history, bank conduct and a personal guarantee. Used chairs are fundable when bought through a recognised salon supplier with a proper invoice. The thing that catches owners out is the total: a handful of chairs rarely reaches a funder’s minimum, so they are usually packaged with backwashes, mirrors and dryers.

Used kit: Yes, second-hand salon chairs are fundable through a trade supplier with a VAT invoice, though private sales and marketplace buys are generally declined.

What would a salon chair cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it

This is soft asset territory and brokers should say so. A used styling chair has almost no secondary market — auction clearance is poor and collection costs more than the chair is worth — so no funder is lending against the metal. They are lending against the salon’s takings, the director’s credit file and, very often, a personal guarantee. A smaller pool of funders write this business than write vans or machinery, and appetite drops sharply for new starts with no filed accounts. Where chairs are bolted to the floor as part of a wider fit-out in a leased unit, the funder may ask the landlord to confirm they will not claim the items as fixtures. Packaging the chairs with the whole salon refit usually gets a better reception than a standalone chair request.

Who buys one

Typically an established salon owner refreshing a tired floor before a rebrand, or someone taking over an existing site where the previous tenant stripped the chairs out. The trigger is usually a lease renewal, a move to a bigger unit, or a chair breaking mid-service and revealing that the rest are the same age. Independent owners with two to eight stations make up most enquiries.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Salon chair finance questions

Can I finance just four styling chairs?

You can ask, but most funders have a minimum advance that four chairs will not reach on their own. The usual answer is to bundle the chairs with backwash units, mirrors, trolleys and any flooring or lighting going in at the same time, so the agreement covers the whole refit rather than a handful of seats.

Do I need to have been trading long?

It helps a great deal. Funders in this space rely on the salon’s track record because the chairs themselves are worth very little if things go wrong. Two years of filed accounts and clean bank conduct opens up the widest choice. Newer salons are still placeable, but expect more questions and a stronger personal guarantee requirement.

My landlord owns the building — is that a problem?

Not usually for loose chairs, which stay your property. It becomes relevant where seating is fixed into a plinth or the agreement also covers fitted furniture. In those cases a funder may want a short letter from the landlord confirming they will not treat the financed items as part of the premises.

Will I own the chairs at the end?

That depends on the agreement type. Hire purchase is designed to transfer ownership once all obligations are met, while a lease keeps title with the funder and ends with a return, an extension or a further arrangement. Salon owners usually prefer hire purchase because the chairs stay in the business.

Can a brand new salon get chair finance?

Sometimes, but be realistic. A start-up salon with no accounts is one of the harder cases in this sector because the security is negligible. What helps is a director with a clean personal credit file, relevant experience, a signed lease and a sensible forecast. We tell people early if the shape of the deal will not fly.
