Every shop still needs one, but the low ticket value makes a manual lathe an awkward standalone finance proposal.

Usually yes, with a caveat about size rather than the asset. A manual centre lathe is funded as equipment, typically on hire purchase, and good used machines are fundable. The difficulty is that many funders set a minimum agreement value, and a single manual lathe can sit below it. That is the thing that catches people out: the machine is perfectly good security, but the deal is too small for parts of the market. Buying it alongside other equipment, or going to funders who write smaller agreements, is how these get done.
Used kit: Yes — good used manual lathes are fundable and age matters less than bed and spindle wear, with well-kept machines of many years still acceptable.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Funders regard a manual lathe as a solid but unexciting asset. Quality machines from known builders hold value for decades and there is a steady trade in them, so security is not the issue. The issue is economics: underwriting a small agreement costs a funder much the same as a large one. Some will not go below a threshold, others specialise in exactly this size of deal. Condition matters more than on CNC because a badly worn bed has real consequences for value, and there is no control generation to hide behind — the machine is judged on wear, not electronics. Chucks, steadies and tooling are soft. Declines here are typically about the applicant’s trading position or the deal being too small to be worth writing.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Repair and maintenance shops, agricultural engineers, marine and plant workshops, toolrooms and training providers. Also almost every CNC shop, which needs one machine for facing off bar, making a soft jaw or fixing something at four in the afternoon. The trigger is often replacing a worn-out machine that has become a scrap generator, or equipping a second unit after a move.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
That is your call, not ours. Where it makes sense is when the lathe is one part of a bigger equipment spend, when cash is better used elsewhere in the business, or when you want the purchase on hire purchase for tax reasons. Buying a single low-value machine outright is often simpler if the cash is sitting there.
Yes, and that is frequently the neatest approach. A funder will write one agreement covering several items on one invoice or a small group of invoices, which gets the total above any minimum and reduces the paperwork. It also tends to produce a better answer than three separate small proposals.
Often, where they are in good order and from a name a dealer recognises. The assessment is about wear and what a used machinery dealer would pay, not the year of manufacture. A tired machine with a worn bed and no tooling is a different proposition from a well-maintained toolroom lathe with a full complement of chucks and steadies.
Not always. Smaller agreements are often decided on a credit search, bank conduct and the directors’ profile rather than a full financial review. Larger proposals need accounts. One advantage of a smaller deal is a genuinely quick process, frequently same-day, provided the information asked for comes back promptly.
Yes. Sole traders and partnerships are funded regularly in engineering, though the agreement may be regulated differently from a limited company one and the funder will assess you personally as well as the business. Some funders prefer limited companies, which simply means we route the proposal to those who are comfortable with your structure.
