Boring machine finance

Borers are bought to machine things nothing else in the shop can hold, and the install bill is often the part nobody budgeted for.

Can you finance a boring machine?

Yes. Horizontal boring machines are funded as hard assets, normally on hire purchase, and good used borers are fundable — these machines have long working lives and an established dealer trade. The thing that catches buyers out is everything that is not the machine. Foundations, floor plates, crane provision, power supply upgrades and rigging can add a great deal to the project, and funders generally treat civils and site works as outside the advance because they cannot repossess a concrete pit. Establish what is fundable before you sign for the groundworks.

Used kit: Yes — used borers fund well and can be decades old where they are in good order, with CNC examples judged on control support rather than age.

What would a boring machine cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Underwriters see borers as durable, long-life security, which counts in their favour, but they also know the machines are enormous. The cost and difficulty of removing one from a building is factored into how much they will advance, and a machine sitting in a leased unit raises questions about landlord access on default. Control generation and continuing support decide the value on CNC borers far more than the year of build, because a large machine on an unsupported control has a very thin market. Boring bars, facing heads and rotary tables are treated as soft costs. Heavy engineering demand follows energy, defence and infrastructure cycles, so funders will read the order book. Declines cluster where a young company takes on a very large machine that dwarfs its balance sheet.

Who buys one

Heavy engineering, fabrication and repair businesses machining large weldments, castings, gearcases, pump and valve bodies, or press and rolling mill components. Often a firm that has been subcontracting its large boring work out for years and is losing control of lead times. Also bought by plant and machinery repairers who need to reclaim and line-bore worn housings rather than replace them.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Boring machine finance questions

Will finance pay for the foundations and floor plates?

Usually not. Concrete, pits, floor plates and structural work become part of the building, and a funder cannot recover them, so they sit outside the advance. Occasionally a funder will allow a limited installation allowance within the overall facility. Treat the civils as a cash cost when you build the project budget and you will not be caught out.

Does it matter that my unit is leased?

It can. A funder financing a very large machine into a rented building may ask about the lease term and sometimes wants a landlord waiver confirming they can access and remove the machine. It is a routine document. Raising it early avoids a delay at the end when everyone is waiting on a signature from a property agent.

Can a thirty-year-old borer be financed?

Often yes. These machines were built to last and a well-maintained manual borer of that vintage can still be commercially useful and saleable. The funder will judge wear, spindle condition and what a dealer would pay rather than the date on the plate. CNC borers of that age are harder, because the control is likely unsupported.

Is portable line boring equipment fundable?

Yes, and it is a different proposition entirely — smaller, mobile and attractive because it can be redeployed anywhere. Funders are comfortable with it, subject to the usual minimum deal sizes. Being portable also means funders may ask how it is secured and insured, since it travels to customer sites rather than staying in one building.

How do funders handle a machine bought from overseas?

They will pay an overseas supplier, but they want the transaction clean: a proper invoice, clarity on currency and who bears exchange risk, and an understanding of duty, VAT and shipping. Those costs usually fall outside the advance. Dismantling and transport from a foreign site is treated as a service, not an asset, so plan to fund it yourself.
