Can you finance mortuary equipment?

Mortuary equipment finance funds the clinical side of a funeral business: refrigerated storage banks, preparation and embalming tables, hydraulic lifting equipment, extraction and ventilation systems and sluice fittings. It is bought when a firm builds its own mortuary rather than relying on a third party, expands storage capacity, or replaces ageing refrigeration. Funders treat it as specialist equipment with a limited but genuine second-hand market, concentrating on recognised manufacturers, whether the units are free-standing or built in, and the stability of the business making the purchase.

Used kit: Yes — used mortuary refrigeration and preparation equipment is bought and funded, provided it is from a recognised manufacturer and in serviceable condition.

What would mortuary equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Underwriters divide this equipment sharply into what can be taken out and what cannot. Free-standing refrigeration banks, mobile lifting hoists and preparation tables are recognisable, transportable items with buyers among other funeral businesses and trade mortuaries, so they fund reasonably. Walk-in cold rooms constructed on site, ducted extraction and plumbed sluice installations are effectively part of the building and carry almost no recoverable value, so funders lean instead on the covenant. Manufacturer matters: equipment from established mortuary suppliers has a resale audience, while unbranded or improvised kit does not. The compensating strength is the customer. Funeral firms have long histories, steady demand and very low failure rates, which is often what persuades a funder to write equipment it could not easily sell on.

Who buys one

Usually a funeral director bringing care of the deceased in-house after years of paying a trade mortuary, or a growing firm whose existing storage no longer copes with winter demand and the longer intervals now common between death and funeral.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Mortuary equipment finance questions

Is a walk-in cold room fundable?

It is harder, because once it is built into the premises it cannot realistically be removed and resold. Funders that write it are relying on the strength of your business rather than the equipment, so trading history carries most of the weight.

Does bringing care in-house strengthen the application?

It usually helps, because you can show the trade mortuary costs the equipment replaces. That gives an underwriter a concrete commercial rationale rather than a general statement about capacity or standards.

Can refrigeration be expanded later on the same basis?

Yes. Adding tiers or a second bank is a straightforward further purchase, and many firms build capacity in stages as volumes grow rather than committing to everything in one go.

Do funders have concerns about this type of equipment?

Mainly about resale rather than anything else. The market for used mortuary equipment is small and specialised, so advances tend to be conservative and the business behind the purchase is examined closely.

Should refrigeration be funded separately from building work?

Almost always. The plant itself is equipment and can be funded; the room, the drainage and the electrical installation around it are building works and sit outside asset finance, so they are usually paid for separately.
