Used hearse finance
Most hearses on British roads are second-hand, because a vehicle built to last three decades rarely needs to be bought new.

Can you finance an used hearse?
Yes, pre-owned hearses can be financed. A used funeral vehicle is assessed on the state of its body, deck and interior, the reputation of the original coachbuilder and the quality of its maintenance record, rather than on the registration year. Purchases come from a small group of specialist dealers or directly from other funeral businesses, and funders active in the sector handle both. What they insist on is clean provenance: a clear invoice, the V5, and confirmation that the seller owns the vehicle outright with no finance outstanding against it.
Used kit: Yes — this is the used market itself, and vehicles two decades old are routinely bought, funded and put straight back into weekly service.

What would an used hearse cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
The paradox of the used hearse is that age is almost irrelevant while provenance is everything. A vehicle can be twenty years old and still be a perfectly good working asset, because these vehicles are garaged, lightly used and maintained to a standard no ordinary car receives. What a funder cannot get comfortable with is an unclear history: a private sale with no invoice, a vehicle imported without documentation, or one still carrying finance from a previous owner. Mainstream motor funders remain unavailable regardless of price, since the coachbuild puts the vehicle outside their systems entirely. The specialists who will write it look closely at the deck mechanism, the state of the body seams and any corrosion around the extension, since those are the faults that are expensive to put right and hard to see from a photograph.

Who buys one
Frequently a newly established funeral director who cannot justify a new build, or an existing firm adding a spare vehicle so a breakdown never threatens a service. Buying used also lets a firm match an existing older hearse when a new one would look conspicuously different in the cortege.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Used hearse finance questions
Can I finance a hearse bought privately rather than from a dealer?
Usually yes, though the checks are stricter. The funder will want a proper invoice, the V5, evidence the seller owns it free of finance, and often confirmation of the payment route. Private purchases take longer to put together than dealer ones.
What should I inspect before committing?
The deck and roller mechanism, the seams where the body was extended, the state of the glass and trim, and any corrosion underneath. Those are the costly faults. Mechanically, the donor chassis is usually the easiest part of the vehicle to put right.
Is an imported hearse fundable?
It can be, but expect more questions. Documentation, registration status and the availability of parts all come into it, and a vehicle built for another market may be harder to resell here, which shows up in the funder’s assessment.
Do service records really make a difference?
A significant one. Because age tells a funder so little about a hearse, the maintenance file is one of the few objective indicators available. A complete record supports the valuation and shortens the questions considerably.
Should I buy used or new for a first vehicle?
Many new firms start used, because the capital commitment is smaller and a sound older vehicle performs the job identically. The counter-argument is presentation, and only you can judge what the families you serve expect to see.
