The working size for serious competitors: room for three or four horses, proper living accommodation, and a chassis built to take real mileage.

Yes. The 7.5 tonne box is the backbone of the UK competition scene and funders treat it as a well understood asset. These vehicles carry three or four horses with genuine living accommodation, are built by established coachbuilders on Iveco, DAF or Mercedes chassis, and hold value well because demand outstrips supply for good examples. Professional riders, producers and yards are buying a business asset, so the agreement is unregulated business finance. Amateur competitors buying for their own horses will usually be in regulated consumer credit. Licence entitlement at this weight depends on when your licence was issued.
Used kit: Yes — good used 7.5 tonne boxes are in constant demand and vehicles fifteen to twenty years old are routinely funded when chassis and floor are sound.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
At this weight the funder is really assessing two assets in one vehicle: a commercial chassis and a coachbuilt living and horse area. Service history on the chassis matters as much as the fit out, and a current plating certificate is expected. Boxes from recognised coachbuilders with a documented build carry strong resale and are easy to place. The regulated question is genuinely live here, because many 7.5 tonne buyers sit on the boundary between serious amateur and professional. A rider who takes livery horses, sells produced horses or teaches is operating a business, and the agreement is unregulated. Somebody competing purely for their own enjoyment is a consumer. Be honest about which you are, since it decides the funder panel and the protections that apply. Licence entitlement varies by licence date — check with the DVLA.

Event riders and showjumpers travelling most weekends between March and October, producers taking several horses to the same show, and stud or dealing yards moving stock. Also amateur owners with three or four horses in the family. The trigger is commonly a season plan that no longer fits into a 3.5 tonne box, or living accommodation that has stopped being adequate for overnight stays at multi day events.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Entitlement at this weight depends on when your licence was issued and what categories it carries, and there are also rules about medical renewals at certain ages. We cannot give entitlement advice. Look at the categories on your licence and confirm the current position with the DVLA before you commit to a purchase at this weight.
That depends on how it is used and whether the journeys are commercial, and the rules differ between private competition travel and paid transport. It is a compliance question rather than a finance one, but it affects how the vehicle is specified and sold on, so check the current requirements for your circumstances before buying.
Less than you might think, because commercial chassis are designed for high mileage and horseboxes typically cover modest distances for their age. What funders focus on is evidence of regular servicing, a clean plating history and a sound floor. A documented low mileage box with no service record is a weaker case than a higher mileage one with full history.
Where the work is being carried out by the supplying dealer or coachbuilder and appears on the same invoice, it can often be included. Work commissioned separately after purchase usually cannot be added to an existing agreement. If you plan a refit, arrange it as part of the purchase rather than as an afterthought.
Many competitors do exactly that, and a sound chassis with a professional refit can be excellent value. For finance purposes the important thing is documentation — who did the work, what was replaced and when. An undocumented refit is valued cautiously, whereas a professionally invoiced one supports the figure you are asking the funder to advance.
