Trailers are the entry point to travelling horses, and although the values are lower than a horsebox the funding questions are not much simpler.

Yes, though not every funder works at trailer values and some have a minimum they will consider. Horse trailers from established makers hold their value exceptionally well, which makes them attractive security, and the second hand market is extremely active. A private owner buying a trailer for their own horses is usually entering a regulated consumer credit agreement. A riding school, livery yard or dealer buying one is on unregulated business terms. Trailers also raise towing entitlement questions, which depend on when your driving licence was issued, so confirm your categories before buying.
Used kit: Yes — used trailers are funded routinely, and twenty year old trailers with sound floors and good tyres still change hands and still attract funding.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Trailers behave unusually as security. They have no engine to wear out, they last for decades with reasonable care, and demand from first time owners keeps used values remarkably firm — a well kept Ifor Williams can still command strong money many years on. The complications are elsewhere. Values are modest, so some funders will not write agreements this small and the panel thins out. Trailers have no V5C, so identification relies on the chassis or serial number, which makes outstanding finance and ownership checks more important, particularly on the private sales that dominate this market. And purpose still governs the agreement: a private owner is a consumer, a riding school is a business. Towing entitlement depends on your licence date — check with the DVLA rather than assuming.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

First time owners who have just bought a horse and need to get it to lessons and local shows, pony club families, and small yards that need a trailer available for vet trips. The trigger is usually the purchase of the horse itself, or a change of yard that makes borrowing transport impractical. Many buyers already own a suitable towing vehicle and simply need the trailer funded.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Towing entitlement depends on when your licence was issued and the combined weight of vehicle and trailer, and the rules have changed in recent years. We cannot advise on this. Check the categories on your licence and the current DVLA guidance, and weigh your loaded combination if you are anywhere near a limit.
Most funders have a minimum below which an agreement is not economic for them, and some trailers fall under it. That does not mean nothing can be done — buyers sometimes fund the trailer alongside a towing vehicle, or a yard includes it in a wider equipment package. Tell us what you are buying and we will say honestly whether it is placeable.
By its chassis or serial number, which is stamped on the frame and recorded by the manufacturer. Funders use that number for outstanding finance and theft checks. Trailer theft is common, so a documented serial number, a registration with a trailer scheme and a clear ownership trail matter more here than on a road registered vehicle.
The floor above everything else, then the ramp, the hinges, the tyres and the brakes. Tyres often look fine but perish with age rather than mileage, and a floor failure while travelling is catastrophic. An inspection by a trailer specialist is inexpensive relative to the purchase and is worth doing on anything you have not seen serviced.
Yes. Multiple trailers for a business are unregulated business finance and can often be arranged under a single facility rather than separate agreements, which is simpler to administer. Funders will look at the trading position of the school and may ask about how the trailers are stored and maintained between uses.
