Can you finance a biomass boiler?

Yes. Biomass boilers are funded regularly, particularly on farms and estates off the mains gas network. The boiler is substantial plant and holds more identity than a heat pump, but once it is sitting in a plant room with a flue through the wall, a fuel store built alongside and buried heat mains running to other buildings, most of the installation has become part of the property. Funders therefore look at the business, at land and building ownership, and at whether you have a reliable fuel supply to run it.

Used kit: Yes, occasionally. Refurbished boilers from a recognised manufacturer with service records are sometimes accepted, though unsupported imported units usually are not.

What would a biomass boiler cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

A biomass installation is really three things in one quote: the boiler and accumulator, which look like plant; the fuel store, hopper and auger, which are part building and part equipment; and the buried district heating mains, which are ground works with no recovery value. Funders assess the parts separately and the balance between them affects appetite. Ownership of the land matters because the heat mains cross it. Fuel supply gets asked about too — a boiler with no secured chip or pellet source is a risk. Where the system displaces a metered heating oil spend evidenced in the accounts, some funders will weigh that reduced cost when assessing affordability alongside trading performance.

Who buys one

Poultry producers heating broiler sheds, grain and crop driers, rural estates heating a house and cottages from one plant room, garden centres and glasshouse growers, sawmills burning their own offcuts, and equestrian and kennel operations. The trigger is usually the cost and hassle of bulk oil deliveries, or a farm with a standing timber resource that is currently going to waste.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Biomass boiler finance questions

Can the fuel store and auger be financed with the boiler?

Generally yes, because a chip boiler without a feed system does not run. Where the store is a purpose-built structure rather than a delivered hopper, funders may treat it as building work and discount it. Break the quote down clearly so we can see what is equipment and what is construction.

Do funders ask about my wood fuel supply?

Often, yes. A boiler is only useful if it can be fed, so a funder may ask whether you have a supply contract, your own timber, or a local chip merchant. It is not a formal condition with every funder, but a clear answer strengthens the application considerably.

What about buried heat mains to other buildings?

Pipework trenched across a site is effectively a land improvement and is not recoverable. Funders tend to look at that portion conservatively, which is another reason ownership of the land matters. The boiler and accumulator carry most of the fundable value in these projects. Show the trenching cost as its own line on the quote.

Is biomass still financeable without a subsidy scheme?

Yes. Funders assess the plant and the business rather than any particular support scheme, and plenty of biomass applications are driven purely by fuel cost and the availability of on-farm timber. Where you do hold scheme payments, tell us, because they form part of the income picture.

Can I finance a boiler if I rent the farm?

It depends on the tenancy. Agricultural tenancies vary enormously and some give long security while others do not. Funders will want to see the tenancy terms and will normally ask the landlord to acknowledge that the boiler remains the funder’s property rather than a fixture of the holding.
