Can you finance a rainwater harvesting?
Yes, although how easily depends entirely on the tank. Above-ground bunded tanks, packaged plant rooms and pump skids are identifiable equipment that can be disconnected and moved, which funders are comfortable with. Buried concrete or sectional tanks are a different proposition: once they are in the ground they are part of the land, the excavation is a large share of the cost, and nothing is recoverable. Filtration, controls and pump sets carry most of the fundable value in below-ground schemes.
Used kit: Yes, in part. Used pump sets, filtration skids and above-ground tanks are traded and can be funded where condition is evidenced; buried tanks cannot.

What would a rainwater harvesting cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
The funding question here is simply whether the storage is above or below ground. Above-ground tanks, kiosks and skid-mounted pump sets behave like equipment: serial numbers, a resale market, and a realistic prospect of removal. Buried tanks are civil engineering — the excavation, crane hire and backfill often cost more than the vessel, and none of it can be recovered, so many funders discount or exclude that part and lend against the mechanical package instead. Land ownership consequently matters much more for below-ground schemes. Where the system replaces an evidenced metered water and effluent spend, some funders will treat that reduction as part of affordability, because unlike a generation projection it can be read straight off historic bills.

Who buys one
Vehicle and plant washing operations, horticultural nurseries and growers, food processors using large volumes of wash water, construction and quarry sites suppressing dust, and distribution centres with vast roof areas and high mains water charges. The trigger is usually a rising metered water and effluent bill, an abstraction restriction, or a planning condition on a new building requiring water reuse.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Rainwater harvesting finance questions
Is a buried tank fundable?
The tank itself is difficult, because once it is in the ground it forms part of the land and the excavation cost has no recoverable value. Funders generally focus on the pumps, filtration and controls. Where possible, an above-ground installation opens up considerably more options.
Can the water bill reduction support the application?
It can, and it is stronger evidence than most energy projections because your metered water and effluent charges are already on historic invoices. Funders will look at actual consumption rather than a supplier’s estimate of what you might capture in an average year. Send two or three recent water invoices with the enquiry.
What if I only need water for vehicle washing?
That is one of the most common applications, and a comparatively simple one. The system is usually a tank, filtration and a pump set serving a wash bay, which is mostly recoverable equipment. Wash bay recycling plant is often financed in the same agreement. Interceptors and drainage remain the parts funders will discount.
Does the system need treatment to be fundable?
Treatment is specified by what the water is used for, not by the funder. Filtration and disinfection equipment is good news for an application because it is identifiable mechanical plant, whereas a simple tank and gravity feed has less in it that a funder recognises as an asset.
Can it be financed alongside a new building?
Yes, though timing needs care. Where harvesting forms part of a construction project, funders release money on commissioning rather than on order, which may be well after the groundworks. Tell us the programme so we can match it to a funder who can work with it.
