Small wind turbine finance
Funding for farm scale and small commercial turbines on tilt-up or lattice masts, typically serving one holding rather than exporting at scale.

Can you finance a small wind turbine?
Yes, although small wind is a narrower market than large commercial wind. Farm scale machines on tilt-up masts are attractive to funders precisely because they can be winched down and relocated, which is unusual among renewable assets. The base and cable run stay in the ground. The practical constraints are the smaller pool of manufacturers still supporting these machines, the availability of spares, and whether the site genuinely suits wind. Most applications are from landowners offsetting their own consumption rather than building an export business.
Used kit: Yes, with care. Used small turbines are traded but funders will want evidence that parts and service support for that model still exist.

What would a small wind turbine cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
The tilt-up mast is the interesting feature. Unlike almost everything else in this sector, a small turbine can be lowered with a winch and taken away on a trailer, so funders can see a recovery route that does not involve cranes and a dismantling contractor. That said, the market is thinner than it was, several manufacturers have left it, and a machine that cannot be serviced or supplied with parts is worth very little — expect funders to look closely at who supports the model. The concrete base and buried cabling are part of the land and carry no value. Land ownership matters, and where the turbine offsets a metered farm demand, that evidenced consumption helps the affordability case.
Makes and models we fund
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Who buys one
Dairy farms running parlours and bulk tanks, poultry units with continuous ventilation loads, remote workshops and quarries with weak supplies, shellfish and aquaculture sites, and island or coastal businesses with expensive imported power. The trigger is usually a large standing electricity demand on an exposed site, or a neighbour’s machine that has visibly been working for years.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Small wind turbine finance questions
Is a small turbine easier to finance than a large one?
In one respect yes, because a tilt-up mast can be lowered and removed without heavy lifting equipment, which gives a funder a realistic recovery route. Against that, the manufacturer base is smaller and less stable, so funders pay unusual attention to who will support the machine long term.
Does a farm scale turbine need planning permission?
Usually it does, and funders will expect the consent to be settled before money moves. Requirements vary by height, location and local policy. It is worth having the decision in hand when you approach us, because it removes the most common cause of delay in these applications.
What if the manufacturer has gone out of business?
That is a real obstacle. A turbine with no spares route is difficult to fund because it cannot be kept running or resold. Where an independent service company supports the model, say so up front, as it can change how a funder views the machine.
Can I move the turbine if I sell the farm?
Physically, a tilt-up machine can be relocated, which is part of why funders view them reasonably. Contractually, the agreement covers the asset wherever it sits, so you would need to tell the funder before moving it. The base and cabling stay behind either way. Relocation also needs fresh planning consent at the new position.
Is the electricity used on site or exported?
Most farm scale machines are sized to offset on-site consumption, with any surplus exported. Funders generally find self-consumption easier to assess because your own metered demand is evidence they can read, whereas export income depends on an agreement they will want to see. Send recent half-hourly data from the supply if you have it.
