Can you finance carbon capture equipment?

Sometimes, and it depends heavily on what you are actually buying. Packaged carbon dioxide recovery plant — the skids used in brewing, distilling and on anaerobic digestion sites — is established equipment with identifiable manufacturers and can be funded much like other process plant. Larger flue gas capture installations are closer to a chemical engineering project, with vessels, columns and pipework built into the site, and those need project structuring rather than an equipment agreement. The gas recovered has a market value, which matters.

Used kit: Rarely. A small used market exists in brewery recovery skids, but most capture equipment is too specific or too new for funders to value confidently.

What would carbon capture equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Two quite different assets share this name and funders treat them as such. A packaged recovery skid is a machine: compressors, scrubbers, a stripper and a liquefier on a frame, from manufacturers who serve the drinks industry worldwide, and it can be disconnected and resold. Funder appetite for that is reasonable. Flue gas capture on an industrial scale is part civil engineering — foundations, columns, tie-ins to existing process plant — and those elements are unrecoverable and outside most equipment funders’ remit, pushing schemes towards project finance. In either case the recovered gas displaces a purchased commodity with invoices behind it, and some funders will weigh that evidenced substitution alongside the accounts. Storage vessels and site works are assessed separately.

Who buys one

Breweries and distilleries recovering fermentation gas instead of buying cylinders, AD operators upgrading biogas and capturing the separated stream, food producers using gas for packaging and freezing, and industrial sites responding to customer or regulatory pressure on emissions. The trigger is commonly a jump in the delivered price of bulk carbon dioxide or a supply interruption that stopped production.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Carbon capture equipment finance questions

Is brewery gas recovery different from industrial capture?

Very. A recovery skid in a brewery is packaged equipment from manufacturers who supply the drinks industry internationally, and it is funded much like other process plant. Industrial flue gas capture is a built installation with foundations and tie-ins, and it normally needs project finance instead.

Can the cost of gas we no longer buy be considered?

Often yes, and it is a stronger argument than most. Bulk carbon dioxide arrives with invoices showing volume and price, so the substitution is measurable from records you already hold rather than from a forecast of how the plant might perform. Keep the last year of delivery notes to hand.

Are storage vessels included in the finance?

Usually assessed separately. Pressure vessels are equipment and are fundable, but the slab, bunding and safety systems around them are site works. Where the vessels come as part of a packaged skid on one invoice, it is simpler than buying them separately. Ask the supplier what is inside the package price.

Is this technology too new for funders?

Recovery skids are not — breweries have used them for decades. Large scale capture is another matter, and the funder pool there is small because residual values are unproven. Being clear about which type of plant you are buying changes the conversation entirely. Say which process stream the plant will sit on when you enquire.

Does a purchase agreement for the gas help?

If you are selling recovered gas rather than using it, yes. A contract with a buyer gives the funder evidenced income to assess. Where the gas is consumed internally, your own historic purchase invoices serve the same purpose and are usually easier to produce. Either route gives the funder something concrete to assess.
