Yes. A sole trader can take business car finance in the trading name — hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire — but the assessment is fundamentally different from a limited company application. There is no separate legal entity, so the funder underwrites you: personal credit file, business bank conduct, and the income shown on your tax return or SA302. The thing that catches sole traders out is that the tax return which minimises your tax bill also minimises the income a lender can see. If your accountant has been efficient, the declared profit may not obviously support the car, and you will need bank statements and context to fill that gap.
Used kit: Yes, and a sensible used car is usually the easiest sole trader case to place

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Sole trader cases live or die on the individual, because there is no balance sheet to hide behind. Funders look at the personal credit file first, then at business bank statements for the rhythm of the trade — regular receipts, no persistent unauthorised borrowing, no bounced direct debits. Declared profit matters, and this is where efficient accounting works against you, so recent bank turnover and an accountant’s letter often do more than the tax return alone. Length of trading counts heavily; a very new trade is much harder. On the asset side, the car needs to look proportionate to the trade — a sensible vehicle against a solid trade is easy, a high-value car against modest declared income is not. It is also worth knowing that a car for a sole trader may be funded on a regulated or unregulated basis depending on the circumstances, which affects which lenders can help.

Sole traders who need a car for work rather than a van — mobile hairdressers, driving instructors, surveyors, consultants, sales agents, therapists covering a region. The trigger is usually an old car becoming unreliable, a contract requiring a presentable vehicle, or a personal agreement ending. Often people who were declined on a consumer product and did not realise a business route existed.

Cars are treated differently from commercial vehicles. A van generally qualifies for the annual investment allowance; a car generally does not, and instead attracts writing-down allowances tied to its CO2 emissions, with fully electric cars in the most favourable position. A car made available for private use also creates a benefit in kind for the driver. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Yes. The agreement is in your trading name and the funder underwrites you personally, using your credit file, business bank statements and declared income. You do not need a limited company. What you do need is evidence the trade supports the payment, which for most funders means recent bank statements alongside your latest return.
It is the most common obstacle we see, because efficient accounting reduces the profit a lender can point to. Business bank statements showing genuine turnover, an accountant’s letter, and a clear explanation of drawings usually resolve it. Choosing a funder who is used to reading self-employed cases matters more than the figure itself.
Longer helps a lot. An established trading history gives funders something to assess and opens up the widest choice of lender. A recently started trade is possible but narrows the field considerably, and you should expect to contribute more up front and to provide fuller evidence of contracts or bookings.
There are two broad routes — claiming actual costs including capital allowances, or using simplified mileage rates — and you generally cannot mix them for the same vehicle. Capital allowances on a car are emissions-based rather than the annual investment allowance a van would get. Your accountant should decide which route suits you before you buy.
Yes. Business finance is arranged in your trading name and assessed on the trade, and products like finance lease are not available to private buyers at all. Depending on the circumstances a sole trader agreement may be regulated or unregulated, which changes which lenders can help and what protections apply. We will tell you which applies to your case.
