Can you finance a first caravan?

Yes. First time caravan buyers are funded routinely, and the process is much the same as for any tourer. As an individual buying for family holidays you will be entering a regulated consumer credit agreement, which means the funder must carry out a full affordability assessment and you receive the protections that come with regulated lending. Beyond the finance itself, the things to settle before buying are what your car can legally and safely tow, what your driving licence permits, where the van will be stored and what insurance will cost.

Used kit: Yes — most first vans are second hand, and funders will look at older vans where the damp report, servicing record and CRiS details are clean.

What would a first caravan cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).

How lenders treat it

A first purchase is a consumer transaction, so the agreement is regulated and the funder applies consumer credit affordability rules. That is a protection rather than an obstacle, but it means the assessment covers your income and outgoings, not just the asset. On the caravan itself, first time buyers are best served by a mainstream make bought from a dealer: the CRiS record will be in order, a habitation check will have been done, and there is a warranty behind it. Private sales are cheaper but narrow the funder panel and remove that safety net. The other thing to get right before signing is the outfit: your car’s towing capability and your licence entitlement, which depends on when your licence was issued, both need checking with the manufacturer and the DVLA rather than taken on trust from a salesperson.

Who buys one

Families who have hired or borrowed a van once and decided to commit, couples approaching retirement planning longer trips, and people priced out of holiday cottages and hotels. The trigger is frequently a first trip in a friend’s van or a visit to a February show, where new entrants make up a large share of the buyers walking the halls.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

first caravan finance questions

What should I check before I even look at vans?

Your car’s maximum towing weight and noseweight from the handbook, the categories on your driving licence, where you will store the van and what storage costs, and an insurance quote. Every one of those can rule out a van you have fallen for, and all four are easier to check before you view than afterwards.

Am I better buying new or used for a first van?

Used is where most first buyers start, because the heaviest depreciation has already happened and the outlay is lower while you find out whether caravanning suits you. New brings a warranty and no unknown history. Both are fundable, and the sensible answer usually depends on how certain you are that you will keep it.

Will the funder check my credit record?

Yes. Any regulated consumer credit application involves a credit search and an affordability assessment, and the funder will look at your income, existing commitments and payment history. If there is something in your record you are worried about, tell us at the start rather than letting an application be declined and leave a footprint.

Do I need a habitation check on a dealer van?

A reputable dealer will normally have carried out a pre delivery habitation check and can show you the report. Ask for it, and ask when the next service is due. On a used van from a dealer this is standard practice, and a dealer reluctant to produce one is telling you something useful.

Can I change my mind after signing?

Regulated consumer credit agreements carry statutory rights, including a right to withdraw within a set period after the agreement starts, and the documentation will set out exactly how that works. Read the agreement before signing and ask about anything you do not follow. Those rights are one of the reasons the regulated distinction matters.
