Caravan finance

private sale caravan finance

Buying a caravan from another owner often costs less, but it removes the dealer warranty and a large part of the funder panel with it.

Can you finance a private sale caravan?

Yes, though the choice of funder narrows considerably. Many lenders will only pay a VAT registered dealer, so a private purchase rules them out. Those who do fund private caravan sales require a signed invoice or bill of sale, the CRiS number and chassis number, confirmation from the CRiS record that the seller is the registered keeper, and evidence there is no outstanding finance. Payment goes straight to the seller from the funder. Because caravans have no V5C, this identity trail carries more weight here than on a motor vehicle purchase.

Used kit: Yes — private sales are used vans by definition, and age is judged on damp readings, servicing and CRiS provenance rather than the year alone.

What would a private sale caravan cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Caravan private sales carry a specific risk that vehicles do not, which is why funders are careful. Without a V5C, the only reliable proof of identity and ownership is the CRiS record and the chassis number stamped on the frame, and stolen caravans with altered identification are a known problem here. A funder will check the CRiS register, confirm the seller is the recorded keeper, and look for finance interests before releasing anything. Payment is made to the seller directly, usually into an account matching the keeper’s name. You should also arrange an independent damp and habitation check, because there is no warranty behind a private sale. Where the buyer is a private individual the agreement is regulated consumer credit, and the combination of regulated lending and a private sale leaves only a small number of funders.

Who buys one

Buyers who have found a tidy van through a club magazine, a storage yard noticeboard or a neighbour giving up caravanning. Often the van has had one careful owner and full servicing, which is exactly what makes it attractive. The trigger is the opportunity, generally at a keener figure than a forecourt, with pressure to decide before someone else views it.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

private sale caravan finance questions

How do I check a private caravan is not stolen?

Run a CRiS check using the identification number before you pay anything. It confirms the registered keeper and flags theft and finance markers. Also find the chassis number physically on the van and make sure it matches the paperwork — tampering with or removing identification numbers is a warning sign that should end the conversation.

What if the seller never registered the van in their name?

That is a genuine problem, because the CRiS record will name someone else and the funder cannot establish that your seller has title to sell. It can sometimes be corrected before completion, but it takes time and the cooperation of the previous keeper. Do not pay a deposit until it is resolved.

Can the funder pay me and let me pay the seller?

No. Funds go directly from the funder to the seller against a signed invoice, normally into an account in the registered keeper’s name. This confirms the money reached the right person for the right asset. Any proposal involving cash changing hands through the buyer will not be accepted.

Should I get a habitation check before buying privately?

Yes. A private sale carries no warranty and no comeback, and damp is expensive and sometimes terminal. An independent habitation and damp inspection is modest in cost relative to the purchase and regularly saves buyers from a van that looks immaculate inside but is wet behind the panels.

Does a private sale take much longer to arrange?

Yes, because of the CRiS verification, seller identity checks and any inspection. Tell the seller finance is involved at the outset so they understand the timetable, and gather the CRiS document, service history and purchase invoice before applying. Prepared sellers make private sale cases run far more smoothly.
