Cylindrical grinder finance

Once a part is hardened, the grinder is the only machine that can save it, which is why these deals are usually driven by a customer specification.

Can you finance a cylindrical grinder?

Yes. Cylindrical grinders are funded as hard assets, commonly on hire purchase, and used machines are fundable where the wheelhead and slides are sound. Values range widely, from a modest manual machine to a substantial CNC grinder, so the underwriting scales with it. What catches buyers out is the ancillary spend. Wheels, dressers, coolant filtration, a chiller and workholding between centres are not trivial, and most are soft costs excluded or capped by the funder. On CNC machines, check the control is still supported before you commit.

Used kit: Yes — used cylindrical grinders fund well, with manual machines acceptable at considerable age and CNC machines judged on control support.

What would a cylindrical grinder cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders class cylindrical grinders as good security with a narrower buyer pool than machining centres. Quality names hold value internationally, particularly Swiss and German machines, and there are specialist dealers who trade them, which a funder will recognise. On CNC machines the control generation and whether the builder still supports it is the single biggest driver of resale value; an unsupported control on a large grinder makes recovery painful and the advance reflects it. Wheels, dressing systems, gauging probes and software are soft costs. Underwriters also note that grinding capacity is often tied to one process for one customer, and a shop grinding one component family for one OEM will be asked about that dependency. Declines are usually credit-driven or where the machine is an unsupported orphan.

Who buys one

Precision subcontractors grinding shafts, spindles, pins, rolls and hydraulic rods, plus bearing, pump and gearbox component makers. The trigger is usually a drawing calling for a surface finish and roundness that turning cannot reach, or a customer approval requiring in-house grinding capability. Also common where a firm has been sending hardened parts out to a grinding house and losing two or three weeks of the delivery window in the process.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Cylindrical grinder finance questions

Is a centreless grinder funded the same way?

Broadly yes, as a hard asset. Centreless machines are more production-oriented and often bought against a specific volume job, so a funder is likely to ask about the work behind it. The machines themselves hold value well and there is a specialist trade in them, so the security side is not the difficult part.

Does the coolant and filtration system get funded?

When supplied with the machine on the same invoice, often yes. A standalone filtration plant or chiller from a different supplier is usually a separate item, which can still be funded but may need its own agreement or to be bundled with other purchases. Ducting and installation labour are generally outside the advance either way.

Can I finance a grinder that needs a refurbishment?

It depends who is doing the work. A machine sold refurbished by a dealer, with a warranty and a single invoice, is straightforward. A cheap machine you intend to rebuild yourself is much harder, because the funder is advancing against the machine as it stands today, not as it might be once you have spent six months on it.

How do funders value Swiss and German grinders against Far Eastern ones?

They rely on dealer values rather than on nationality, but in practice the established European names do hold their money better and resell internationally, which shows in what a funder will advance. That does not make other machines unfundable; it means the advance tracks the realistic resale value of the particular machine.

Do I need a specific customer order to justify the purchase?

No. Funders assess your ability to pay overall, not the business case for the individual machine. That said, if the proposal is large relative to your existing turnover, being able to explain where the work is coming from helps an underwriter get comfortable far more quickly than an argument about general capacity.
