Screener finance
Screeners turn mixed arisings into saleable grades, and unlike a crusher they earn from day one on soil alone — which funders find easier to picture.

Can you finance a screener?
Yes. Mobile screening plant is funded as hard plant on hire purchase or lease, new or used. Funders are generally more relaxed about screeners than crushers because the machine is mechanically simpler, works in a less punishing environment and has a broader set of second-hand buyers including soil recyclers, topsoil producers and landscapers. The practical issue is screen media. Meshes and punch plates wear and are configuration-specific, and a used machine arriving with the wrong or worn-out media cannot produce the grades you sold on. Confirm what media comes with the machine and get it on the invoice.
Used kit: Yes. Used screeners fund readily to around eight or nine years, with belt, bearing and mesh condition mattering more than the hour count.

What would a screener cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
Screeners sit a notch easier than crushers in a funder’s mind. They are still specialist and still go to a recycling or quarry desk, but the machine is simpler, wear costs are lower, and the used market includes buyers who never go near a crusher, which shortens the assumed disposal period. Terex Finlay and EvoQuip machines are well recognised, as are the main scalping screen brands. Funders will ask what the screened product is sold into and whether the site is permitted, because a screener on an unlicensed site has a limited future. Seasonality matters too: screening volumes drop in a wet winter, and funders with sector experience expect that rather than reading it as decline. Weak applications are new entrants with no established outlet for the product.

Who buys one
Soil recycling and topsoil producers, muck-away operators grading arisings before resale, quarry and sand pit operators, and demolition contractors running a screener alongside a crusher. The trigger is often a change in what the customer will accept — a housebuilder specifying graded fill, or a landscape supplier wanting screened topsoil — which makes unscreened material worth far less than screened.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Screener finance questions
Is a screener easier to finance than a crusher?
Usually, yes. Screeners are mechanically simpler, cost less to run and appeal to a wider set of second-hand buyers including soil and compost operators. That shortens the disposal period a funder assumes. Both still go to specialist desks rather than to general lessors, and both benefit from a clear permitting position.
Do screen meshes come with the machine on finance?
Whatever is fitted at supply forms part of the asset. Spare mesh sets are consumables, so they only sit inside the agreement if the dealer itemises them on the same invoice. Because media is configuration-specific and wears, it is worth funding a spare set up front rather than buying it later.
Can I finance a trommel for compost or soil?
Yes. Trommels are funded as plant in the same way as scalping screens. Organic and compost applications are corrosive and funders with waste sector experience allow for that in their residual view. As with any waste asset, the site permit position is part of the assessment rather than an afterthought.
Does a wet winter affect a screening business application?
Funders who know the sector expect volumes to drop in wet months and will not read that as decline, provided you explain it. Send figures across a full trading year rather than a quarter. Repayment profiles can sometimes be shaped to reflect a seasonal income pattern where the funder offers it.
Can a soil recycling start-up get screener finance?
It is difficult without an outlet for the product. A funder wants to see who buys the screened material and at what volume, because the machine only repays itself if the product sells. A permitted site, a named customer and a director with sector experience turn a weak case into a workable one.
