Can you finance a trench roller?
Yes. Trench rollers are funded on hire purchase as plant, though the ticket is modest so most applications go down a small-ticket route and come back quickly. New and used machines from Bomag and Wacker Neuson both fund. The thing buyers rarely think about is the remote control handset. It is an electronic component, it is expensive to replace, and a machine that turns up without a paired working handset is effectively unusable. Check the handset and its charger are listed on the invoice, particularly on a used purchase where they are easily separated from the machine.
Used kit: Yes, provided the remote works — used trench rollers up to around eight years old fund without much difficulty.

What would a trench roller cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it
This sits at the small end of hard plant. The machine is heavy, serial-numbered and identifiable, but the value is low enough that funders use automated scoring rather than a manual read, so a clean trading company gets a quick answer and a marginal one gets a quick no. Padfoot trench rollers hold value reasonably because utilities demand is steady, and Bomag and Wacker Neuson dominate the used market. The electronics are the residual risk from a funder’s point of view: a machine with a dead or unpaired remote is close to unsellable, and inspectors know to test it. As with most low-value plant, applications are far stronger when the roller is bundled with other kit on one invoice than when it is applied for alone.

Who buys one
Utilities and drainage contractors backfilling narrow trenches, cable and duct installation gangs, and groundworks firms working to a specification that requires layered compaction in confined excavations. The trigger is usually a compaction specification a plate cannot meet, or a safety policy that stops operators working inside an unsupported trench. Hire companies keep them because utilities framework contractors hire them constantly.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Trench roller finance questions
Why is the remote handset such a big deal?
Because without it the machine cannot be operated at all. Handsets are paired to the machine, expensive to replace and easy to mislay between owners. On any used purchase, confirm the handset is present, paired and charging properly before the deal completes, and make sure it appears on the invoice alongside the machine.
Can I finance a trench roller on its own?
You can, but the value is at the lower end of what most funders want to write as a standalone agreement. If you are buying other plant at the same time, putting everything on one invoice usually produces a better outcome. Where it is a single purchase we will place it with a small-ticket funder.
Do trench rollers hold their value?
Reasonably well. Utilities work is continuous and there is always demand for compaction kit, so a sound machine with a working remote sells. Values are modest in absolute terms, which is why funders treat these as small-ticket rather than as a significant security position in their own right.
Can a utilities subcontractor get plant finance easily?
Generally yes. Utilities subcontractors have a repeat income stream from framework work, which funders find reassuring compared with project-by-project construction. Payment terms from tier one contractors can be long, so showing the framework and your position on it helps explain any lumpiness in the bank statements.
Is a plate compactor an alternative?
For shallow work, sometimes, but a plate cannot achieve the layered compaction a trench roller delivers in a deep narrow excavation, and it puts an operator in the trench. Many specifications now effectively require a remote machine. Buying a plate to avoid the cost usually means hiring a trench roller anyway.
