Structured cabling finance

Pay for a cabling installation over time rather than in one hit, even though the cable itself becomes part of the building the day it goes in.

Can you finance structured cabling?

Honestly, this one needs care. Structured cabling can be financed, but it is the least recoverable item in the whole technology sector. Once cable is pulled through containment and terminated into patch panels, it belongs to the building, and stripping it out would cost more than the copper is worth. So no funder is lending against the cable — they are lending against your company. Used cabling is not a thing anyone funds. The practical catch is that most cabling quotes are mainly labour, which means the application is judged purely on trading history and accounts.

Used kit: No. There is no second-hand market for installed cabling, and reclaimed cable is not something any funder will write an agreement against.

What would structured cabling cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Cabling is the purest soft asset I see. There is no serial number to record, no resale channel, nothing to collect, and the value transfers to the landlord the moment it is installed. I fund it, but I want to be clear what I am doing: this is an unsecured business loan wearing an asset finance label. So I read the accounts carefully, I look at how long the company has traded, and I ask whether the premises are owned or leased and how long is left on the lease. A tenant installing substantial infrastructure into a property they may vacate shortly is a question I will raise. Where cabling is part of a wider project with real hardware in it, I am more comfortable.

Who buys one

Businesses fitting out new premises, warehouses adding data points to a mezzanine or racking run, schools rewiring blocks over a summer holiday, and offices where staff are still working over a patchwork of cable added a desk at a time. The trigger is often a move, a refurbishment, or an audit showing the existing installation cannot support the speeds new equipment expects. Landlords and serviced office operators also finance cabling as part of preparing space for tenants.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Structured cabling finance questions

Why would a lender fund cabling if they can never get it back?

Because they are not lending on the cable. They are lending on your business, and the cabling is simply what the money is being spent on. Funders do this every week across sectors where the purchase is installation heavy. It changes the underwriting, not the availability, so expect more focus on your accounts.

Can cabling be financed on its own, or does it need hardware alongside?

It can be financed on its own, but a mixed project often lands better. When a funder can see switches, a server or access points alongside the installation, there is at least some identifiable equipment in the deal. Cabling-only applications are perfectly placeable, they just rest entirely on the covenant.

We lease our building. Does the landlord need to know?

Almost certainly, because cabling is an alteration to the property and most commercial leases require consent for works. That is a landlord matter rather than a funder one, but do resolve it early. A funder may also ask how long the lease has left before committing to an installation with a long useful life.

Can Wi-Fi replace the need for cabling?

Not really, and funders know it. Access points still need cabled backhaul and power over Ethernet, so wireless coverage rests on a wired foundation. Businesses that try to avoid cabling usually end up paying for it later at greater cost and disruption, which is an argument for doing it properly first time.

Is fibre worth including while the floor is up?

Commercially that is your call, but it is a sensible question to ask while the containment is open, since the labour is the expensive part and doing it twice is the costly mistake. From a funding perspective fibre is treated exactly the same as copper: unrecoverable, and assessed against your business.
