Can you finance UPS and power protection?

Yes. An uninterruptible power supply is a heavy, serialised piece of equipment that sits in a rack or on a plinth, which makes it one of the more straightforward technology assets to fund. Funding is normally structured as hire purchase or lease in the company name. Used units are rarely funded, mainly because battery condition is impossible to verify. The thing to budget for is the batteries: they are consumable and will need replacing well before the unit itself is finished, so factor replacement into your planning rather than assuming the installation is a one-off cost.

Used kit: Rarely. Refurbished units are available and specialists do trade them, but battery age and load history are hard to verify, so most funders prefer new equipment with a manufacturer warranty.

What would UPS and power protection cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Power protection is one of the better assets in this sector and I treat it as light industrial rather than IT. A three-phase unit is heavy, permanently sited, serial numbered, and there are specialists who service and resell them, so recovery is plausible. The complication is batteries. They degrade on a known curve, they are a significant share of the original cost, and a recovered unit with tired batteries is worth much less than the invoice suggests. I therefore discount the battery element. The electrical installation, the switchgear and any generator changeover work are building improvements and carry nothing for me. On the covenant side these applications are usually easy, because the buyer has typically just had an expensive outage.

Who buys one

Manufacturers whose production lines suffer expensive restarts after a dip, data-dependent businesses protecting servers and storage, retailers keeping tills and payment systems trading through an outage, and laboratories and care settings with equipment that cannot be allowed to stop. The trigger is usually a specific incident: a power cut that corrupted data or scrapped a batch, or a site survey after relocating to premises with an unreliable incoming supply.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

UPS and power protection finance questions

Can the electrical installation be financed with the UPS?

Usually yes, as part of one project. Be aware that the distribution work, isolators and any changes to the incoming supply become part of the building and carry no recovery value. Funders accept that routinely; it simply means the installation portion is assessed against your accounts rather than treated as security.

Do batteries need replacing during the agreement?

Very likely, depending on the technology and the environment they operate in. Batteries are consumable and degrade with temperature and discharge cycles. Plan for replacement as a maintenance cost rather than assuming the original installation covers the whole working life of the unit, and keep the service regime in place.

Is a UPS easier to fund than a server?

Broadly comparable, and both are at the easier end of technology finance. A UPS is heavier and more permanently sited, which helps, but the battery content undermines its resale value. A server holds its value a little better in the refurbished channel. In practice funders are comfortable with either.

Can a generator be included in the project?

Standby generators are fundable and are genuinely substantial assets with their own market, often assessed as plant rather than IT. Where a generator sits alongside a UPS in one project we will look at whether a combined application or a separate one works better, since the generator can carry real security weight.

We had an outage that cost us a day of production. Does that strengthen the case?

It gives the application a concrete commercial rationale, which underwriters always prefer to a general upgrade. Quantifying the loss — scrapped work, downtime, recovery hours — makes the purchase self-evidently sensible. It does not change the asset position, but a clearly justified project consistently moves through the process more easily.
