Workstation finance
Fund the high specification machines your design, engineering or post-production team actually needs, without the whole build cost landing on one month.

Can you finance a workstation?
Yes. A CAD or render workstation is funded as business IT equipment, normally on hire purchase or lease, and it sits slightly better with funders than a standard laptop fleet because the machines are heavier, stay on desks, and hold a little more value. That said, it is still a soft asset and the underwriting is a covenant decision. Used workstations are seldom funded. The point that surprises people is that the specification which justifies the price to you — professional graphics, certified drivers, huge memory — means very little to an underwriter, who is reading your accounts and the contracts that will pay for the machines.
Used kit: Rarely. Ex-lease workstations are traded in volume by resellers, but the funders that will write against them are few, and the ones that do are pricing the business rather than the metal.

What would a workstation cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
How lenders treat it
Workstations are a slightly better risk than notebooks, and I will say so honestly: a tower with professional graphics does have a trade market and it does not leave the building. But nobody should pretend it is a hard asset. Realisable value falls away quickly once a newer generation of cards lands, and reconditioning costs eat what is left. So I underwrite the practice. I want to see fee income that supports the commitment, a sensible ratio of the facility to turnover, and ideally a named project or framework behind the purchase. Consultancies with lumpy income can still be funded — I would rather see honest management figures alongside the accounts than a polished forecast with nothing behind it.

Who buys one
Architectural practices moving to full BIM, structural and civil engineering consultancies, product design studios, surveying firms running point cloud data, and post-production or motion graphics houses. The trigger is almost always a specific piece of work: a model that will not open on existing hardware, a client demanding deliverables the current machines cannot render overnight, or a new software version raising its minimum requirement. It is a capability purchase, not a tidy-up, which is why it tends to be urgent.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Workstation finance questions
Is a workstation easier to finance than an ordinary office PC?
Marginally. The unit value is higher, the machine is physically fixed to a desk and there is a genuine trade market for professional graphics hardware. None of that turns it into a hard asset, so the assessment still rests on your accounts. The practical benefit is that fewer funders decline it outright on principle.
Can the software licences go on the same agreement as the hardware?
Frequently yes, and it is a common request in design practices where the annual subscription rivals the cost of the machine. Funders will normally allow a software element alongside tangible equipment. A proposal that is almost entirely licence cost is a different conversation, and is judged purely on the covenant behind it.
We render overnight and hardware dates quickly. Does that argue for leasing?
It is exactly the argument leasing was built for. If you expect to hand machines back and step onto a newer generation rather than run them into the ground, a lease keeps the obsolete kit off your balance sheet at the end. If you intend to redeploy older towers to junior staff, ownership may suit better.
Do funders care which software we run?
Not for its own sake, but it tells them what kind of practice you are. A firm running Revit, Solidworks or Unreal is usually a professional services business with fee income and a project pipeline, and underwriters read that as useful context. They will not, however, lend against the licence itself as security.
Can I add more machines later as the team grows?
Yes. Additional workstations are usually added as a new schedule rather than reopening the original agreement, which keeps things simple. If you anticipate steady hiring it is worth saying so at the outset, because some funders will note a facility limit that makes each subsequent addition quicker to approve.
