Can you finance an used motorhome?

Yes. Used motorhomes are funded every day of the week. Because leisure vehicles depreciate slowly and demand stays high, underwriters are comfortable with age here in a way they are not with cars or vans. Condition, damp history, service record and habitation checks carry more weight than the year on the plate. Vehicles well over a decade old are placed regularly. The two things that actually complicate a used purchase are buying from a private seller rather than a dealer, and whether the agreement is regulated consumer credit for private use or unregulated business finance.

Used kit: Yes — this is the used market, and vehicles fifteen years old and beyond are funded where history, damp checks and condition support the value.

What would an used motorhome cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Age is judged differently in this market. A fifteen year old coachbuilt with a documented damp free history and continuous habitation servicing can be an easier case than a five year old one with no paperwork, because the underwriter is pricing risk against a resale value that has already flattened out. What genuinely narrows the panel is the source of the purchase. Buying from a dealer means the funder pays a VAT registered business and the transaction is simple. Buying privately removes a large share of funders, and those that remain need the invoice, the chassis number and written confirmation the seller owns it outright with nothing registered against it. Whether the agreement is regulated depends on whether you are buying for personal leisure use or for a business.

Who buys one

Frequently a buyer who has hired a motorhome once, enjoyed it, and does not want to pay new prices to find out whether they will use it. Also owners moving up a size after a first season, and people buying at a show or an autumn dealer clearance when stock is plentiful. The common trigger is retirement or a change in working pattern that suddenly makes long trips possible.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

used motorhome finance questions

Is there an age limit on the motorhome?

There is no single cut off across the market. Some funders work to an age at the end of the agreement, others judge each vehicle on condition and evidence. Older vehicles with full habitation and damp check history are placed regularly, so it is worth asking rather than assuming a vehicle is too old to fund.

Does a damp reading matter to the funder?

It matters enormously, because damp is the single biggest destroyer of value in a coachbuilt. A current habitation check showing acceptable readings reassures an underwriter that the structure is sound. If a vehicle has had damp repaired, keep the invoices — documented repair work is far better received than an unexplained gap in the record.

Can I part exchange my current vehicle?

Yes, where you are buying through a dealer. The part exchange value is normally applied against the purchase price before the finance is arranged, which reduces what you need to fund. If the vehicle you are trading still has finance on it, tell us early, because the outstanding balance has to be settled as part of the transaction.

Will I need an inspection?

Sometimes. Funders may ask for an engineer’s report or a habitation check on older or higher value vehicles, particularly on private sales where there is no dealer warranty behind the purchase. A recent independent report from the seller can speed things up considerably and is worth asking for before you commit.

Can I use it abroad?

Most agreements permit European travel but many have conditions around the length of time the vehicle can be out of the country and require you to notify the funder. Because you do not own the vehicle outright during the agreement, you may also need a letter of authority for some border crossings. Check the terms before booking a long tour.
