Funding for Volkswagen transporter campervans, whether you are buying a factory California or a professionally converted T5, T6 or T6.1 from a specialist builder.
Whole-of-market — 60+ lenders searched, including
Yes. Volkswagen campervan conversions are one of the easiest leisure vehicles to fund because the base vehicle holds its value and the market for them is deep. Funders will want to know who carried out the conversion, when it was done and whether it was a professional build with paperwork, a factory California, or a home project. Professional and factory conversions are treated much like any other vehicle. If you are buying for private family use the agreement is likely to be regulated consumer credit; if the van is for a business the same vehicle is funded on unregulated business terms.
Used kit: Yes — used VW campers are funded routinely, and well-kept T5s well over a decade old are still fundable because demand keeps values firm.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
The question that decides everything is who converted it. A California, a Westfalia or a named UK converter with an invoice and a build spec is a known quantity, and the funder can value it. A van described only as ‘camper converted’ with no record of who did the work is much harder, because the underwriter cannot separate the value of the conversion from the value of the panel van underneath. The second question is purpose. A van bought for family holidays normally falls under regulated consumer credit, with the protections that brings. The identical van bought by a limited company for staff or hire use is unregulated business finance, and a different set of funders will look at it.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Typically a couple in their thirties or forties buying their first van for weekends and surf trips, or a family trading a hatchback plus a tent for something they can sleep in. The trigger is usually a booked trip, a child old enough to travel, or simply finding the right van on a specialist forecourt before somebody else does. Tradespeople converting a work van to double as a weekend camper are the other common enquiry.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Sometimes, but it is much harder. Funders want evidence of a professional build — an invoice from the converter, a specification and ideally photographs of the work in progress. A self-converted van with no documentation is valued as a panel van, so the amount a funder will advance may fall well short of what the seller is asking.
Usually not. Transporter campers age well and the resale market stays strong, so funders are more relaxed about age here than they are with many vehicles. What matters more is mileage, service history, MOT record and whether the conversion has been maintained. An older van in good order is often an easier case than a newer one with gaps in its history.
It matters a great deal. Many funders will only pay a VAT registered dealer, so a private purchase narrows the panel considerably. Those that do fund private sales want the invoice, the vehicle identification number and confirmation the seller owns the van outright with no outstanding finance registered against it.
It depends on why you are buying. A van bought mainly for personal and family use by an individual will normally be a regulated consumer credit agreement. A van bought by a company, a partnership or a sole trader predominantly for business use is unregulated business finance. We ask about use at the outset so the enquiry goes to funders who can actually help.
It is possible but slower. The funder needs the vehicle registered in the UK with a V5C before drawdown in most cases, so timing has to be planned around customs, any VAT position and DVLA registration. Imported Japanese and German vans are common, and a clear conversion history makes the case far easier to place.
