Can you finance an order picker?

Yes. Order pickers are mainstream finance assets and are funded on hire purchase, lease or contract hire like any other warehouse truck. Used machines are readily placed. The distinction that matters is level: a low-level horizontal picker is a robust, widely traded machine that any wholesaler could use, while a high-level picker lifting an operator to the third or fourth beam is a more specialised item with a smaller onward market. Both are fundable, but funders view their future values quite differently.

Used kit: Yes — used low-level pickers fund very easily and high-level machines are fundable too, with condition of the platform and safety gear weighing heavily.

What would an order picker cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Comfortable ground, with a caveat on the tall machines. Low-level pickers are among the most actively traded electric trucks in the country, they refurbish well and funders barely blink. High-level pickers carry the same considerations as VNA equipment: they are tied to a rack configuration, they include operator platform and safety systems that must be certified, and the pool of onward buyers is thinner. Expect a funder to ask what the truck is picking from and how tall the racking is. Across both types, battery health and chassis damage set the used value — these trucks live a hard life in a busy pick face and it shows. Fleets are usually written as one facility with a machine-by-machine schedule.

Who buys one

E-commerce fulfilment operations, drinks and grocery wholesalers, and spare parts distributors whose volume has shifted from full pallets to individual cases. The buying trigger is usually a picking rate that has plateaued, a peak season where agency staff on foot could not keep up, or a new customer contract with service levels that the current method cannot hit without more bodies.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Order picker finance questions

Are high-level pickers harder to get approved than low-level ones?

Slightly, because they cost more and sell to fewer buyers second-hand. A funder will want to understand the racking they work in and how long you expect to be in the building. It is not an obstacle for an established business, but the questions are more searching than on a horizontal picker.

Can we fund a fleet of pickers for a seasonal peak?

Yes, though consider whether ownership is the right answer for equipment you only need for a few months. Finance suits machines that work all year. For genuine peak-only capacity, short-term hire often costs less overall, and a broker worth using will say so rather than push an agreement.

Does the safety harness and platform equipment affect fundability?

Not the harness, which is a consumable. The platform, gates and guarding are integral to the machine and form part of its value. On a used high-level picker a funder will expect the safety systems to be intact and certified, because a truck that cannot be signed off cannot be sold or used.

Is contract hire common for order pickers?

Very. These machines run hard and downtime on a pick face is expensive, so bundling maintenance into a fixed monthly cost appeals to operations managers. The trade-off is that you hand the truck back at the end, which suits a fleet being refreshed on a cycle rather than a single machine you intend to keep.

Can pickers be financed alongside the racking they work in?

Yes, and it makes a stronger application. The truck brings real security to a package where shelving and racking bring very little, and funding the whole pick face as one project is far simpler than splitting it across separate agreements with different start dates.
