Can you finance an AGV and autonomous mobile robot?

Yes, and the robots themselves are better security than most people assume. An AGV or AMR is a serialised mobile machine that can be picked up and redeployed in another building, which is exactly what a funder wants. The complications are elsewhere: fleet management software, integration work and any floor magnets or reflectors are soft costs, and residual values for newer manufacturers are still unproven. Expect a funder to lean on your business more than it would for a manned forklift of similar value.

Used kit: Rarely — the second-hand market is immature, so funders generally look at new units from established manufacturers rather than used robots.

What would an AGV and autonomous mobile robot cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

A developing market and funders are still finding their level. The positive case is genuine: an automated pallet mover or tugger is a physical machine with a serial number, it is not fixed to the building, and the established truck manufacturers offering automated versions bring a dealer network and parts supply that supports value. The caution is equally genuine: the used market barely exists yet, so residual assumptions are based on judgement rather than auction evidence, and a funder recovering a fleet may find the robots useless without the software licence that made them work. Navigation infrastructure in the floor is a fixture. Robotics-as-a-service subscriptions are not finance at all and cannot be funded, though they may suit a client better than ownership.

Who buys one

Manufacturing plants running repetitive line-side deliveries, cold stores where labour is hard to retain, and fulfilment operations trialling goods-to-person picking for the first time. The trigger is usually a night shift that has become genuinely difficult to staff, a long repetitive route that clearly does not need a person sitting on it, or a productivity target that cannot be met by adding yet more agency labour at peak.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

AGV and autonomous mobile robot finance questions

Is robotics-as-a-service the same as leasing?

No. A service subscription bundles the robots, software and support into a monthly fee with no asset transfer and no fixed capital sum, and it is a supply contract rather than a finance agreement. It can be the right answer, but it is not something a funder provides and it will not appear on your balance sheet as owned equipment.

Will the fleet management software be included in the finance?

Partly at best. A perpetual licence bought with the hardware can sometimes be included within a package, but recurring subscription costs cannot. Since the robots need the software to function, it is worth agreeing with the supplier how the licence survives any change of ownership before you sign anything.

Are automated forklifts from the big truck brands easier to fund?

Generally yes. A funder looking at an automated version of a familiar stacker has a manufacturer, a dealer network and a manual equivalent to reference for value, which makes the residual assumption far less speculative than for a robot from a start-up with no UK service presence.

Does floor marking or reflector installation get funded?

It is soft, in the same category as wire guidance. Magnetic tape, reflectors and floor markings belong to the building and have no recovery value, so funders treat them as project costs to be carried by the overall facility rather than as assets in their own right.

Can we finance a small pilot deployment?

Sometimes, though two robots may fall below a funder’s minimum and a pilot by definition has no proven return yet. Where the business is established and the amount is sensible it can be done. A pilot funded successfully also makes the full rollout a much easier conversation later.
