Can you finance a sortation system?
Yes, but these are major capital projects rather than equipment purchases and they are underwritten as such. A sortation system is largely bespoke, integrated into your building and your software, and it has very little independent resale value, so a funder is lending against your business, your contracts and your volumes. Hire purchase and lease both work. The point that consistently catches operators out is how much of a sortation quotation is software, integration and commissioning, none of which a funder regards as an asset.
Used kit: Rarely — used sortation equipment occasionally moves between sites, but funders will not normally advance against a second-hand system given how bespoke it is.

What would a sortation system cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
A specialist conversation and a small group of funders. The machinery is real — drives, carriers, belts, scanners — but a sorter is configured to one building’s chute layout and one operator’s sortation logic, so recovery value is poor relative to cost and a funder will say so. Expect underwriting to focus on your covenant, the contracts underpinning the volume, and the remaining term on the building. Structure matters more than on any other asset here: long build programmes, staged supplier payments, foreign currency where the manufacturer is overseas, and a large soft-cost element all need agreeing up front. Where the operator is substantial, manufacturer-backed finance or a syndicated facility is often the most workable route, and bundling the conveyor and trucks alongside improves the picture.

Who buys one
Parcel carriers, national fulfilment operators, postal and courier hubs, and large retailers running their own distribution network. The trigger is almost always a contract or a volume commitment that the current manual sort simply cannot meet, or a peak season in which agency labour costs, mis-sorts and missed collections have made the automation business case obvious to everyone on the board.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Sortation system finance questions
Why does a funder care how long is left on our lease?
Because a sorter installed in a building you leave is close to worthless, and the funder is relying on you generating the income to pay for it from that site. A finance term extending well past your lease break raises an obvious question, and having a clear answer prepared makes the application go far more smoothly.
How much of the project will actually be funded?
It depends on the split between hardware and services. Mechanical and electrical equipment is the fundable core. Design engineering, software licences, training and commissioning labour are soft and may be trimmed. Asking the supplier to itemise the quotation in those terms before it goes to a funder is the single most useful preparation.
Can equipment manufactured overseas be financed in sterling?
Usually yes, with the funder paying the supplier and the agreement denominated in sterling, but the exchange rate at payment date becomes a real variable on a long build. Agree with the supplier who carries that risk, because a currency movement between order and delivery can change the funded amount.
Is this the sort of project a broker adds value to?
More than on a forklift, frankly. The number of funders who will write a large bespoke sortation project is small, the structuring points are numerous, and knowing which funder will accept staged payments and a high soft-cost ratio saves months. That is the work, rather than simply comparing headline pricing.
Can the sorter and the conveyor feeding it be one facility?
Yes, and it is usually sensible. They are commissioned together, often supplied by the same integrator, and one agreement avoids the awkwardness of two funders with claims over parts of a single connected installation. It also gives the funder a clearer view of the whole project.
