Can you finance a crop sprayer?

Yes. Crop sprayers fund well, whether self-propelled or trailed, and used self-propelled machines hold their value strongly enough that funders will go back a good many seasons. Hire purchase is the usual structure and repayments can be weighted towards harvest. What surprises buyers is how much the funder cares about compliance rather than condition: a boom sprayer must be tested under the National Sprayer Testing Scheme at the required intervals, and a machine with an expired certificate is harder to value and harder for a dealer to resell. Ask for the current test certificate and the service file before you sign.

Used kit: Yes, particularly self-propelled machines, which stay fundable for many seasons

What would a crop sprayer cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Sprayers are one of the better-behaved arable assets from a funder point of view. Self-propelled machines from established UK builders have a deep and loyal secondhand market, with demand from farms that could never buy new, so recovery values hold up. Underwriters look at hours, boom width and condition, whether the machine has induction and rinse systems that meet current expectations, and whether it has a valid NSTS certificate. Trailed sprayers sit at a lower value and are simpler to place. Because spraying is concentrated into spring, harvest-weighted or seasonally shaped repayments are commonly available from agricultural funders. Declines usually come from corrosion, an unsupported import, or a chemical-damaged boom with no repair record.

Who buys one

Arable farms that have outgrown a mounted sprayer and want the timeliness of their own self-propelled machine, growers moving to wider booms and tramline systems, and agronomy or spraying contractors covering ground for several farms. The trigger is usually a season where a contractor could not get on in the right window, or an older machine whose section control and GPS cannot deliver the accuracy that the assurance scheme and the agronomist now expect.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Crop sprayer finance questions

Does a sprayer need a current NSTS test to be financed?

It is not usually a formal condition, but you want one. A valid certificate tells a funder the machine is legally usable and resellable, and it tells you the boom, nozzles and pump are sound. Buying a machine with a lapsed test means budgeting for whatever the test throws up before you can legally spray with it.

Can spraying contractors get finance on the strength of their client list?

Yes. A contractor with a spread of farms under recurring agreements is a good risk, because spraying work repeats year after year and is rarely dropped. Funders will want to see invoicing history and whether you hold the relevant certification, and a diversified customer base counts for more than one very large client.

Is it better to fund a self-propelled or a trailed sprayer?

That is an operational decision. Self-propelled gives timeliness, clearance and better resale but costs far more; trailed ties up a tractor but is cheaper to buy and simpler to fund. From a lending point of view both are fine, and a trailed machine can often be funded alongside the tractor that pulls it on one agreement.

Can the repayments be timed around harvest?

Frequently yes with an agricultural funder. Because arable income arrives after harvest, a profile that takes lighter payments through spring and heavier ones in the autumn matches the reality of the business. It is one of the areas where a specialist agricultural lender is clearly better than a generic finance offer.

What condition issues make a used sprayer hard to fund?

Corrosion is the main one. Chemical damage to the frame, tank mountings or boom, a boom that has been welded after a strike with no record, and a machine that has sat unrinsed over winter all reduce what a funder thinks they could recover. A clean, documented machine from a known farm is much simpler.
