Yes. Balers are a straightforward asset to fund on hire purchase and the used market is active enough that funders are comfortable with machines that have already done several seasons. Baler-wrapper combinations are treated as one machine rather than two. The number that matters to an underwriter is bale count, which is the equivalent of hours on a tractor and is far more telling than the year of registration. Where people come unstuck is buying late: dealers sell out of good used balers in spring, and a machine bought in a hurry in June with no inspection is the one a funder will query.
Used kit: Yes, commonly, with bale count mattering far more than age

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Balers sit at a lower value than the headline harvest machinery, which means some larger funders are simply not interested and the deal belongs with an agricultural lender that works at that level. Resale is reliable because every livestock area has buyers, and mainstream marques move quickly. Underwriters look at bale count, chamber condition, and whether the wrapper on a combi unit has been serviced. Contractors are assessed on the acres committed and whether baling income is invoiced promptly, because per-bale work is notorious for slow payment. Repayments can be weighted towards the summer, which suits a contractor whose baling income lands between May and September, though many farms simply take a level profile because the machine supports year-round forage.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Livestock and dairy farms baling their own silage, hay and straw, and contractors baling for neighbours on a per-bale basis. The trigger is often net wrap or knotter problems costing hours in a settled weather window, a move from clamp to bale silage after a wet season, or a contractor taking on enough extra acres that one baler no longer keeps up between cuts.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
One. An integrated combi such as a Fusion or a similar machine is a single item on a single invoice and is funded that way. It is only when you buy a standalone baler and a separate trailed wrapper that you are looking at two items, and even then they can usually go on one agreement if the dealer invoices them together.
A lot. It is the honest measure of how hard a baler has worked, in the way hours are for a tractor. A machine with a modest count and a full service record will be funded more easily than a newer machine that has been on contract work every day of the season. Ask for the count off the monitor before you commit.
Yes, though it is worth being honest with yourself about whether owning beats paying a contractor. Funders will support it if the farm accounts carry the payment. Many smaller farms fund a good used machine and take on a little contract baling for neighbours to make the numbers work.
Only if it is on the same invoice from the same supplier. Buying a bale trailer from a different dealer means a separate small agreement. If you know you need both, ask the dealer to source and invoice them together so it becomes one straightforward transaction.
Broadly the same, but large square balers carry a higher value and are bought mainly by straw merchants and contractors, so funders look harder at the contract work behind them. Knotter condition and plunger bearing history are the questions that come up on used machines.
