Funding for the equipment that fits out a farm workshop, from welding plant and a pillar drill through to a vehicle lift and an air system.

Yes for the equipment, no for the building. Workshop machinery is excellent security from a funder point of view because it sells to engineering firms, garages and fabricators as well as to farms, which is a far wider market than most agricultural kit enjoys. Welders, lathes, presses, compressors and lifts all fund on hire purchase. The shed itself, once erected on a base, becomes part of the holding and needs borrowing secured on the farm instead. The practical tip is to buy the equipment as one order so it makes a single sensible agreement rather than several awkward small ones.
Used kit: Yes, readily, and workshop machinery stays fundable at a considerable age

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Workshop equipment is unusual on a farm in that it produces no income directly, so the affordability case rests entirely on the wider business rather than on anything the asset earns. That is not a problem, but it does mean the accounts carry the decision. Against that, the security is strong: metalworking and lifting equipment has a deep national secondhand market well outside agriculture, so recovery values are reliable and lenders are relaxed about condition and age. Vehicle lifts installed into a floor raise a mild fixture question, though they are generally accepted as removable. The realistic issue is value, since individual items are small; buying a whole workshop fit-out at once solves that neatly.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.
| Machine | What it is |
|---|---|
| Clarke metal bandsaws | Cutting saws for steel stock |
| Clarke hydraulic presses | Bench and floor presses for bearings |
| Kemppi MIG welders | Multi-process welders for repair work |
| ESAB TIG welders | Precision welding sets for thin sections |
| Harrison M300 lathe | Centre lathe for shaft and pin work |
| Colchester Student lathe | Workshop lathe for general turning |
| Bradbury two post lifts | Vehicle lift for pickups and vans |
| Stertil-Koni mobile column lifts | Column lifts for tractors and lorries |
| Ingersoll Rand rotary screw compressors | Continuous duty workshop air supply |
| Atlas Copco GA compressors | Screw compressors with ring main feed |

Farms that have decided doing their own repairs beats waiting days for a dealer fitter in the middle of harvest, contracting businesses maintaining their own fleet, and estates with enough vehicles and machinery to justify proper lifting and welding facilities. The trigger is usually a breakdown bill, or a growing machinery fleet that makes on-farm servicing the cheaper option.

We publish the deals we arrange, with no client named and no rate quoted. See what we have funded in agriculture.
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Not through asset finance. Once a frame is erected and a floor is poured, the structure belongs to the land and there is nothing a funder could repossess. The building is borrowed against the farm; the contents go on asset finance. Most workshop projects are funded exactly that way.
It changes where the underwriting focus falls rather than stopping the deal. Because there is no income stream attached to a lathe, the decision rests on the farm accounts. The counterweight is that the equipment itself is excellent security, with buyers well beyond agriculture.
Usually, yes. Individual tools are too small to be worth separate agreements, but a full fit-out quoted and invoiced as one order becomes a sensible deal with one repayment. It also means you get the workshop working properly rather than assembling it piecemeal over several years.
Rarely. A two post or four post lift is bolted down rather than built in, and funders generally accept it as removable equipment. Where an inspection pit or a structural alteration is involved, that part of the work falls on the building side of the project.
Yes, and age matters less here than almost anywhere else in farm finance. A well-built lathe or press has a working life measured in decades and holds value accordingly. Funders will want it identified properly by serial number, particularly if you are buying privately or from a machinery auction.
