Can you finance a forestry tractor?

Yes, and tractors are one of the easiest assets in this sector to finance. A tractor has a serial number, a huge second-hand market and an agricultural funder panel that knows the brands inside out, so both new and used machines are placed readily. Forestry specification does not hinder that. The one thing to get right is the guarding: if a bare tractor is bought from a dealer and then sent to a specialist for forestry protection, the conversion work can end up outside the agreement. Ask for the tractor to be invoiced complete with the guarding fitted.

Used kit: Yes — used tractors are funded across a wide age range, with hours, service history and condition setting the terms rather than the year alone.

What would a forestry tractor cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it

Agricultural funders dominate here and they are comfortable, because tractors are the most liquid asset in rural lending and values are well published. That means a wide panel, competitive terms and a reasonable view on older machines. They will ask what the tractor is doing: a farming business is judged on accounts and land, while a forestry contractor is judged on contracted work and existing commitments. Forestry guarding is a plus for the buyer and broadly neutral for resale, since it narrows the pool slightly but appeals strongly within it. Private sales between farms are routine and funders in this market handle them regularly, though they still require an invoice, serial number and proof of clear title with any outstanding finance settled from the drawdown. Declines usually reflect existing commitments rather than the machine.

Who buys one

Estate and farm operations running their own woodland, and small forestry contractors who need one machine to pull a timber trailer, drive a winch and run a flail rather than three specialised machines. The trigger is often a woodland management plan or a grant-funded thinning programme that suddenly creates years of work. Firewood producers buy them to power a processor and move timber around the yard.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Forestry tractor finance questions

Can forestry guarding be included in the tractor finance?

Yes, if the tractor is invoiced complete with the guarding fitted. Where the tractor comes from a dealer and the guarding is fitted afterwards by a specialist, you get two invoices and the conversion often falls outside the agreement. Ask the dealer to supply the machine finished, even if they subcontract the work.

Do I need to be a farmer to use agricultural finance?

No. Agricultural funders lend to forestry contractors, firewood producers and estate businesses as well as farms. What they are really lending against is the tractor, which they understand very well. Your trading profile affects the terms and the information required, but it does not close off the agricultural panel.

Is an older tractor still fundable?

Usually yes, and tractors are funded at ages that would rule out most other assets. Values are transparent, parts remain available and demand is constant. Very old machines may be restricted to a shorter agreement, and at some point the advance becomes too small for certain funders, but age alone rarely kills the case.

Can I finance a tractor and a timber trailer at the same time?

Yes, and it is very common. Both are agricultural assets with strong resale, and where one dealer supplies both, a single invoice and a single agreement covers the outfit. Where they come from different suppliers you may end up with two agreements, which is workable but means two payments.

Will a lender fund a tractor bought at a farm dispersal sale?

Some will, though auction buying takes preparation. Payment deadlines are short and many funders will not pay an auctioneer directly, so the route needs agreeing before the hammer falls. Get an approval in principle first, and have the lot number, the serial number and the invoice ready straight after the sale.
