Most organisations start by searching for a minibus for sale, not for minibus finance — and then discover that the vehicle, the seating configuration and the funding are one decision, not three. We help schools, care homes, charities and operators find the right minibus and arrange the funding, across a panel of 60+ UK lenders.

What you can fund

9 seater minibuses

Usually drivable on a standard car licence.

16 seater minibuses

The workhorse size for schools and care.

17 seater and above

PSV territory — check licensing first.

Used minibuses

Ex-fleet vehicles with full service history.

Accessible conversions

Tail lifts, ramps and wheelchair tracking.

Welfare & PTS vehicles

Patient transport and welfare configurations.

What to check before you buy

A minibus is bought on specification far more than on price. Getting the specification wrong is expensive and difficult to undo, so it is worth being deliberate about five things before you look at a single vehicle.

Seats, and what they cost you

The step from a 16 seater minibus to a 17 seater minibus is not just one seat. Above 16 passenger seats the vehicle becomes a PSV for most purposes, which changes licensing, driver requirements and operating obligations. A 17 seater minibus can be the right answer, but it should be a decision rather than an accident.

Below that, a 9 seater minibus can usually be driven on a standard car licence, which is why community groups and smaller care providers often stop there.

Licence category and driver availability

Anyone who passed their test before 1997 generally has D1 entitlement. Anyone who passed after does not, and will need to obtain it. Before buying a larger minibus, check who will actually be allowed to drive it — a vehicle nobody can legally drive is the most expensive mistake in this market.

New or used minibus for sale

A used minibus for sale from a specialist dealer at half the price of new often makes better financial sense, particularly for organisations covering modest annual mileage. Ex-fleet vehicles are frequently well maintained with full service history. The trade-off is a shorter available finance term, because lenders cap the vehicle age at the end of the agreement rather than at the start.

Accessibility and conversions

If you may need wheelchair access later, it is far cheaper to buy a vehicle already suitable for conversion than to adapt an unsuitable one. Tail lifts, ramps and floor tracking all affect payload and seat count, so factor them in at specification stage.

Then the funding

Once you have found the vehicle, the funding should fit the organisation rather than the other way round. Schools and academy trusts often align repayments to a budget or academic year. Care providers and charities may be part-funding through a grant. Operators usually want the vehicle earning before the first payment lands. All of that is arrangeable, and it is easier to structure before you commit than after.

We are a broker, not a dealer, so we have no reason to steer you towards a particular vehicle or forecourt.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before buying a minibus?
Seat count and the licensing it triggers, who is legally allowed to drive it, whether you may need wheelchair access later, service history, and the funding structure. Specification matters more than price in this market.
What licence do I need for a 16 or 17 seater minibus?
Drivers who passed their test before 1997 generally hold D1 entitlement. Anyone who passed later usually does not and will need to obtain it. Above 16 passenger seats the vehicle becomes a PSV for most purposes.
Is a used minibus a false economy?
Rarely. A well-maintained ex-fleet vehicle at half the price of new often makes better sense for modest annual mileage. The main constraint is a shorter finance term, because lenders cap the vehicle age at the end of the agreement.
Can you help me find a minibus as well as fund it?
Yes. We source vehicles as well as arrange funding, and because we are not a dealer we have no incentive to steer you towards particular stock.
Should I buy accessible now or convert later?
If wheelchair access is likely, buying a vehicle already suitable for conversion is considerably cheaper than adapting an unsuitable one. Conversions affect payload and seat count, so plan for it at specification stage.
Do you cover my area?
Yes — CW Asset Finance is based in Tadcaster and works with clients Leeds, York, Harrogate, Wakefield, Selby, Tadcaster & across North & West Yorkshire, as well as nationwide.
