Long reach excavator finance
Long reach machines are bought for a purpose, not for general hire, and funders assess them accordingly — the contract matters as much as the machine.

Can you finance a long reach excavator?
Yes, though it needs placing with the right funder rather than the first one. A long reach excavator is still a hard asset, but the buyer pool is narrow: dredging, flood defence, lagoon and demolition specialists, not general groundworks. That narrow resale market makes some funders cautious, and a purpose-built long reach presents better than a machine converted with a third-party front end. The value sits in the base machine. If the long reach front is aftermarket, be ready to evidence who built it and whether the standard boom is included, because a machine that can be returned to standard configuration is far easier to fund.
Used kit: Yes, but selectively — factory-built used machines up to around eight years fund well, while older aftermarket conversions need a stronger covenant behind them.

What would a long reach excavator cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
This is specialist plant and it belongs with funders who write specialist tickets, typically independents with a plant desk rather than a general bank lessor. Security is real but slow: a long reach can take months to sell rather than weeks, so expect a more conservative structure, a contribution on an older machine, and closer questioning about the work behind it. Factory-built long reach machines from CAT, Hitachi, Komatsu, Volvo and Doosan present best. Aftermarket conversions can still be funded but the funder will want to know whose boom it is and whether the original front end comes with the deal. What gets these declined is a general contractor with no track record in the application buying on speculation. What gets them approved is a named framework, a sensible machine and a business that has done the work before.

Who buys one
Flood defence and watercourse contractors, drainage board framework suppliers, lagoon and slurry specialists, and demolition firms doing high reach enabling works. The trigger is almost always a specific award — an Environment Agency or internal drainage board framework, a reservoir desilting programme, or a demolition package where the structure cannot be approached at close quarters. Very few buy one speculatively, and funders know that.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Long reach excavator finance questions
Can I finance a long reach conversion on a machine I own?
Sometimes, though it is not straightforward. Funding a front end alone means taking security over a component fitted to an asset the funder does not own. It is more commonly done as a refinance of the whole machine once the conversion is complete, which gives the funder security over a single complete unit.
Do I need a contract in place to get approved?
Not formally, but it makes an enormous difference. A named framework or award shows the funder where the repayments come from and why a specialist machine is justified. Without one, expect closer scrutiny of the balance sheet and a larger contribution. Send the award letter with the application.
Is a long reach harder to fund than a standard 21 tonne?
Yes, modestly. The asset is more specialised and the resale pool much smaller, so funders assume a longer disposal period. The structure tends to be tighter rather than the answer being no. A factory-built machine from a major marque will always present more easily than an aftermarket conversion.
Can I fund the standard boom as well as the long reach front?
Usually yes, provided both appear on the supplier invoice. It is worth doing. A machine that can be converted back to standard configuration appeals to a far wider set of buyers, which supports the residual value and makes the funder more comfortable from the outset.
Will the funder want to inspect the machine?
On specialist and used plant, often yes. An independent inspection confirms condition, hours and that the machine matches the invoice description. It is routine rather than a warning sign, and on a long reach it usually also confirms the pin sizes and the origin of the front end. We will arrange it as part of the process.
