Mini excavator finance
Mini diggers are the most financed machine in UK groundworks — small enough to buy quickly, valuable enough that funders treat them as proper security.

Can you finance a mini excavator?
Yes. A mini excavator is funded as a hard asset, usually on hire purchase so the machine is yours outright at the end, or on a lease where the tax treatment suits you better. New and used both qualify, and a well-kept Kubota, Takeuchi or JCB mini stays fundable well into double figures for age because the resale market is so dependable. What catches people out is the attachment package — buckets, a quick hitch and a breaker bought on the same deal can normally be rolled into the agreement, but only if they are itemised on the supplier invoice before it is drawn up.
Used kit: Yes — used minis are funded routinely, and a tidy machine with sensible hours is still fundable at ten years old or more.

What would a mini excavator cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
Minis are about as straightforward as plant gets. They sit firmly in the hard asset bracket, the used market is deep and liquid, and a funder repossessing a three-year-old 1.5 to 3 tonne machine knows it will clear at auction without drama. That means almost every funder category will look at them — bank-owned lessors, independents and the manufacturer’s own finance arm — and nil deposit is achievable for a limited company with clean filed accounts. Declines come from the customer side far more than the asset side: unsatisfied CCJs, a recent phoenix, or a brand new company with no director experience behind it. Hire fleets are judged on utilisation and the age profile of the existing fleet; owner-operators are judged on the contracts sitting behind the purchase.

Who buys one
Mostly two to six-man groundworks and landscaping firms buying their first or second machine, and self-employed operators who have been hiring in weekly and finally worked out that the hire bill outweighs a repayment. The trigger is usually a run of booked work — a housing plot, a string of drainage jobs, a utilities subcontract — that needs a digger on site every day rather than three days a week. Hire fleets buy minis in batches ahead of the spring season.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Mini excavator finance questions
Can I finance a mini digger if I am a sole trader?
Yes. Sole traders and partnerships are funded every week on minis, though the funder will usually want to see trading history and will often ask for a personal guarantee, which for a sole trader is effectively already the case. A short trading record is not automatically a problem if the operator experience is there.
Does the trailer and buckets go on the same agreement?
Usually yes, provided they appear on the same supplier invoice and are listed as separate line items with their own descriptions. A plant trailer sometimes has to be split onto its own agreement because it is road-going and plated, so tell us early if one is part of the package.
Can I finance a mini excavator bought privately?
Sometimes. Private sales are harder than dealer sales because the funder cannot rely on a VAT-registered supplier, a warranty or a clean title check. It is not impossible, but expect an inspection, proof of ownership and a slower process. Buying through a dealer is almost always the quicker route.
What documents do I need to apply?
For most applications a supplier invoice or proforma, recent business bank statements and company details are enough to get an indicative answer. Larger deals, or applicants with thinner trading history, may need filed accounts and a summary of the work the machine is going onto. Send what you have and we will tell you what is missing.
Is it better to buy new or used on finance?
It depends on utilisation. A new machine carries warranty and better residual protection, which funders like; a used one carries a lower capital cost, which helps cash flow. Heavily used machines on long hours often justify new. Machines that work two or three days a week usually do not.
