Rotating telehandler finance
A roto replaces a crane, a scissor and a fixed handler in one machine, and it carries a price tag that reflects all three — funders treat it accordingly.

Can you finance a rotating telehandler?
Yes. Rotating telehandlers are funded on hire purchase or lease as high-value hard assets, and the established makes hold value well because supply into the UK has never been generous. Used machines are fundable. The difference from a fixed handler is that the ticket is much larger, so the funder underwrites the business properly rather than waving it through on asset strength alone. What catches people out is operator competence and insurance: a roto used as a lifting appliance needs a properly trained operator, a current thorough examination and often an appointed person for lift planning, and insurers price it as crane-adjacent rather than as a telehandler.
Used kit: Yes, though more selectively than fixed handlers — a used roto with full examination and service history up to around eight years places well.

What would a rotating telehandler cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
Treat this as a large-ticket specialist lift asset rather than a telehandler with extra features. Merlo and Manitou dominate and both have a genuine used market, but volumes are low, buyers are specialists, and disposal takes longer than a fixed handler, so funders assume a slower sale. That means most of these are written by independents with a plant or lifting desk, or by the manufacturer’s own captive on new stock. Hire fleets get the best reception because utilisation on a roto is usually strong and the funder can see where the income comes from; a first-time owner-operator buying one to win work it does not yet have is the classic decline. Existing commitments matter here more than on smaller plant, because one roto can outweigh a whole yard of minis on the balance sheet.

Who buys one
Specialist lifting and access hire companies, steel erectors, timber frame and modular installers, and larger groundworks firms who have realised they are spending heavily on mobile crane hire for short lifts. The trigger tends to be repeat crane invoices on the same site, or a client base that keeps asking for something the fixed handler cannot reach. Roofing and cladding specialists on constrained urban plots buy them for the same reason.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Rotating telehandler finance questions
Is a rotating telehandler classed as a crane for finance?
Not for finance purposes, but it is often treated as crane-adjacent for insurance and for site rules. Funders underwrite it as high-value plant. Your insurer may want to know about lifting operations, appointed persons and duties being carried out, so speak to them at the same time as arranging the funding rather than afterwards.
Can a hire company fund a roto on utilisation figures?
Yes, and utilisation is exactly what a funder wants to see. Rental rate, days out and the age profile of the existing fleet tell the underwriter where the repayment comes from far better than accounts alone. Established access and lifting hire companies generally get a strong reception on this asset.
Can I include the jib, winch and man basket?
Yes, provided they are itemised on the supplier invoice. Attachment packages on a roto are substantial and it is normal to fund them together with the machine. Anything used for lifting persons carries its own certification requirements, so keep the paperwork for the basket separate and current.
Do I need trained operators before the machine arrives?
You need them before it works, and in practice that means before delivery. A roto used for lifting operations requires a competent trained operator and, for anything beyond basic duties, proper lift planning. Funders do not test for this, but insurers and principal contractors certainly do, and an uninsured machine is a serious problem.
Can I refinance a roto I already own to release cash?
Yes. High-value plant is well suited to refinance because there is real equity to release. The funder values the machine, takes title and advances against it. Age, hours, specification and the strength of your business all affect what is available, so send the service history and examination reports up front.
