Orthodontic equipment finance

Orthodontics buys in workflows rather than single machines, so the funding usually needs to cover a chain of kit bought at once.

Can you finance orthodontic equipment?

Yes, and orthodontic purchases are usually funded as a linked package rather than item by item. A typical schedule runs from a cephalometric imaging unit through an intraoral scanner to a resin printer, post-cure unit and thermoforming press for in-house aligners. All of that is fundable hardware. What is not fundable is the per-case aligner licensing, the treatment planning subscription and the lab fees that make up much of the running cost, and buyers regularly assume those can be rolled in. They sit outside the agreement.

Used kit: Yes for imaging and scanners, generally under about eight years old; used resin printers are harder to place because the optical engine wears and resale is thin.

What would orthodontic equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Specialist orthodontists are among the strongest covenants in dentistry, with predictable instalment income from patients and long treatment plans, and healthcare desks price them accordingly. The assets divide neatly: scanners and printers are portable and hold value, while the ceph unit is a fixed, shielded installation with poor standalone recovery. A funder will usually be relaxed about the mix if the hardware total is dominated by movable items. They are less relaxed about in-house aligner production as a business model where the practice has no track record in it, because the projected saving depends on volumes nobody can evidence yet. Applications fail on unregistered operators, on quotes dominated by software, and on practices whose patient instalment plans are already funded by a third party the underwriter has not been told about.

Who buys one

Specialist orthodontic practices bringing aligner fabrication in house to stop paying case fees to a manufacturer, and general practices with a growing short-term ortho list who need a ceph for records. A third group is the multi-site orthodontic group standardising imaging across branches so records travel properly between clinicians. The trigger is nearly always case volume reaching a point where outsourcing looks expensive.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Orthodontic equipment finance questions

Can in-house aligner printing be funded before we have proved the volumes?

Usually yes, because funders assess the practice’s existing income rather than a forecast saving. What they will not do is lend on projections alone if the practice is new. An established ortho list with filed accounts carries the application; the printer is simply the asset on the schedule.

Do we need a separate agreement for the ceph unit?

Not normally. A single schedule covering imaging, scanner, printer and press is cleaner and reaches a facility size more of the market will write. We would only split it where one item is second-hand and another new, as some funders handle those differently. Tell us at the outset if any item on the list is second-hand and we will structure the application around it.

We run three sites. Can equipment at different addresses sit on one agreement?

Yes, provided all the sites belong to the same borrowing entity and each address is disclosed. Funders record installation addresses on the schedule, so tell us where each item lands. Moving an asset between your own branches later needs the funder to be notified. That is usually a short email rather than a formal process, but it does need doing.

Is a treatment planning subscription ever fundable?

Only where it is sold as a perpetual licence on the equipment invoice, which is increasingly rare. Case-by-case licensing and cloud planning seats are services. Budget for them separately, because seeing them stripped out of an approval after you have committed to a supplier is a genuinely unpleasant surprise.

Are specialist orthodontists treated differently from general dentists?

In practical terms yes, favourably. Long treatment plans and patient instalment income read as predictable to an underwriter, and specialist list registration reinforces the professional covenant. It rarely changes whether you are approved, but it widens which funders will compete for the business. In practice that means more choice on structure and a better chance of getting the whole equipment list into one facility.
