Can you finance veterinary dental equipment?

Yes. Veterinary dental units, intraoral dental X-ray systems, high-speed handpiece delivery units, ultrasonic scalers and dedicated wet tables are funded regularly, usually as one package because a practice building a dentistry workflow buys the whole chain at once. Second-hand units are fundable through dealers. The one that catches practices out is handpieces: they wear out, they are small, and although they can be listed on a schedule most funders would rather see them treated as running cost than capitalised alongside the unit.

Used kit: Yes — refurbished dental units and X-ray generators up to around eight years old are fundable where a veterinary dealer supplies and installs them.

What would veterinary dental equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders see this as low-value, low-drama equipment attached to a strong professional covenant, so the assessment is quick and the questions are about the practice. Veterinary dental X-ray systems are the most valuable and most recoverable part of the schedule; the delivery unit and compressor behind it are worth comparatively little used, and a wet table bolted to a drain is effectively a fixture. Because the totals are modest, some funders route this to an unsecured product instead of hire purchase, which suits practices that would rather not register an asset agreement at all. Sticking points are the usual ones in veterinary lending: no filed accounts, a practice mid-acquisition, or an applicant whose premises are licensed rather than leased.

Who buys one

Small animal practices formalising dentistry as a service, typically after a vet or nurse has done additional training and the practice wants to stop referring extractions. Others buy because taking intraoral radiographs has become the expected standard and their current setup cannot produce them. Practices adding a dedicated dental room, so scaling aerosols are kept out of the main theatre, are a steady third group.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Veterinary dental equipment finance questions

Is a veterinary dental X-ray worth financing separately?

It can be, as it is the highest value and most recoverable item in a dental setup, but you will usually get better terms by putting it on one schedule with the delivery unit and table. A single coherent package is easier to place than two small applications.

Can handpieces go on the agreement?

They can be listed, but most funders would rather they did not, because they wear and get replaced faster than the agreement runs. Treating them as consumable running cost and capitalising the unit, compressor and X-ray is the structure underwriters are most comfortable with. It also keeps the agreement matched to equipment that will still exist when the last payment is made.

We want a dedicated dental room. Can the building work be included?

A proportion sometimes can where it is invoiced with the equipment. Drainage, extraction and partitioning are soft costs with no recovery value, so funders limit the exposure. If the room build is the majority of the spend, it usually needs a different product alongside the equipment finance.

Does a nurse-led dental clinic change the application?

Not from a funder’s point of view. Underwriters assess the practice as a business and do not look at who within the team delivers a particular service. The registered practice and its accounts are what is being credit assessed, not the clinical staffing model. Who operates the equipment is a matter for you and the RCVS rather than for the lender.

Can we finance dental equipment for two branches at once?

Yes, where both branches trade under the same entity. List each installation address on the schedule so the funder knows where its assets live. If the branches are separate companies, they need separate applications, even if the same people own both. Where that happens, a cross-guarantee between the companies sometimes lets one funder cover both sites.
