Dental autoclave finance

Sterilisers rarely fail at a convenient moment, and a practice cannot open without one, so speed of decision matters more than usual here.

Can you finance a dental autoclave?

Yes, although an autoclave on its own is often too small a ticket for a conventional asset agreement, so it is commonly funded either as part of a decontamination room package or through a short unsecured facility. Vacuum sterilisers, washer disinfectors, ultrasonic baths and the room’s benching are all fundable. The thing that surprises people is that dental treatment is largely VAT exempt, so a practice usually cannot recover VAT on the purchase — which means the VAT element is a real cost and often pushes practices to look at rental structures rather than outright hire purchase.

Used kit: Rarely. Second-hand sterilisers are hard to place because validation history is difficult to evidence and most funders would rather see a new unit with a service contract.

What would a dental autoclave cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Sterilisers are a low-drama asset for an underwriter, but a low-value one. The recovery position is poor — a used autoclave with an incomplete validation record is close to worthless — so funders price the practice, not the machine. Healthcare desks do this on covenant alone and will often approve against a GDC registration, filed accounts and a clean bureau search without so much as a site visit. Because the amounts are modest, several lenders will only offer an unsecured business loan, which is frequently the faster route anyway. Where applications stall it is almost always credit history rather than asset quality: recent defaults, a director with a live individual voluntary arrangement, or a practice whose last accounts are badly overdue at Companies House.

Who buys one

The typical caller is a principal whose steriliser has failed a validation test or thrown a vacuum fault, with a practice inspection in the diary. Behind that sit planned replacements driven by HTM 01-05 compliance work, squats equipping a decontamination room to current standards, and expanding practices that need a second steriliser because instrument turnaround is holding up the surgery schedule.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Dental autoclave finance questions

My autoclave has failed and I need one this week. How quick is finance?

For a trading practice with reasonable credit, an approval in a day is realistic and some unsecured facilities pay out the same day. The constraint is usually the supplier’s engineer diary rather than the money. Send the quote through as soon as you have it rather than waiting until the machine is condemned.

Why would I lease a steriliser rather than buy it outright?

Because most dental income is VAT exempt, practices cannot generally reclaim VAT on equipment purchases, which changes the arithmetic between owning and renting. Whether a rental structure suits you depends on your accountant’s view of your own position, so we would always suggest asking them before deciding which route to take.

Can I fund the whole decontamination room rather than just the machine?

Yes, and that is normally the better approach. A room package containing the steriliser, washer disinfector, ultrasonic bath, benching and sinks reaches a sensible facility size, gives the funder identifiable hard assets, and saves you running several small agreements side by side. It also means the whole room is replaced on one timetable rather than piecemeal over several years.

Does the validation and installation qualification go on the finance?

Usually it can if the supplier includes it on the equipment invoice. Installation qualification and operational qualification are services rather than assets, so a funder will treat them as soft cost and carry only a proportion. Keep them on the same invoice rather than letting the engineer bill separately.

I am a sole trader practice. Does that limit my options?

Not much. Plenty of funders write to sole traders and partnerships as readily as to limited companies, and in dentistry the professional registration carries real weight. The main practical difference is that you are personally liable by definition, so the credit assessment looks harder at your personal file.
