Physiotherapy couch finance

Couches are the backbone of a physio clinic and rarely bought one at a time, which is what makes the funding worth arranging.

Can you finance a physiotherapy couch?

Yes, usually as part of a clinic fit-out rather than as a single item. Electric height-adjustable couches, hydraulic plinths, traction and mobilisation tables and treatment room furniture are all fundable, and multi-room clinics buying several at once reach a sensible facility size easily. The thing to be aware of is that couches are durable and hold up for many years, so funders see a low resale value on used stock and effectively lend against the clinic. A single couch on its own will usually be steered to an unsecured loan instead.

Used kit: Yes, but seldom worth it — used couches are inexpensive enough that funders would rather see new stock, and second-hand items usually ride inside a larger schedule.

What would a physiotherapy couch cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it

Chartered physiotherapists and registered osteopaths and chiropractors are recognised professionals and healthcare desks will treat them as such, which helps a young clinic more than the couches ever could. The asset side is weak: treatment couches are long-lived, plentiful second hand and cheap to replace, so there is little for an underwriter to secure against. That pushes many of these deals towards unsecured lending assessed on the practice, the owner’s credit file and the premises. Income mix is worth flagging — clinics with insurer-funded or occupational health contracts read more predictably than pure self-pay lists. The usual failure points are start-ups with no accounts and no guarantor, applicants operating from short-notice room rentals, and facility sizes too small for an asset funder to justify the work.

Who buys one

Physiotherapists and osteopaths opening their own clinic after working for someone else, established practices adding treatment rooms as the diary fills, and sports clubs or occupational health providers equipping treatment spaces. Chiropractors buying specialist drop or flexion-distraction tables are a distinct group, as those are higher value and more identifiable than a standard couch. Universities and private rehabilitation units equipping teaching clinics come to us occasionally as well.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Physiotherapy couch finance questions

Is one couch enough to be worth financing?

Usually not through asset finance, because the amount is below most funders’ minimum. A short unsecured facility is the practical route for a single item. If you are equipping several rooms at once, asset finance becomes worthwhile and gives you a wider choice of lenders.

Can gym and rehab equipment go on the same agreement?

Yes, and it strengthens the application. Rehab equipment, exercise bikes, functional trainers and weights are identifiable assets with a used market, which gives the funder more to secure against than a schedule made up entirely of couches. Put everything on one quote from the same supplier where you can, as mixed suppliers complicate the paperwork without improving the outcome.

We are a new clinic with no accounts. What are our chances?

Reasonable, with a personal guarantee, a signed lease and evidence of your professional registration and prior earnings. Funders back clinicians starting out regularly. What weakens the case is having no premises secured and no demonstrable history of clinical income. Even a modest set of accounts from self-employed work carries more weight than a business plan forecast.

Do insurer-funded patients help the application?

They do, in the sense that recognised insurer work is more predictable than purely self-pay income and shows a referral route. It is not a requirement. It simply gives an underwriter something concrete when they are assessing whether the diary will stay full. Contracted occupational health work has much the same effect on how the application reads.

Can chiropractic tables be funded the same way?

Yes, and often more easily. Drop tables and flexion-distraction tables carry higher values and are more identifiable than standard couches, which lifts a schedule into asset finance territory and gives the funder a better recovery position if things go wrong. Osteopathic and sports therapy tables at the higher end of the range behave the same way.
